Living in Texas you don't need something like this too often. We had a small freeze and I decided to get a heater for the bird bath... to which I haven't needed to use it until now. I put it out yesterday to be prepared for the next few days, but didn't turn it on as we weren't supposed to be below freezing until the next day. Well we got to freezing over night and the bath was froze solid. I turned on the heater hoping it would thaw it at least enough to get some water. It thawed it completely! The birds don't seem to mind it being in the bath and have been at it a lot today. I did have to use a few smaller rocks to hold the cord down to make sure it stays submerged, but nothing major. So happy I got this for my wild bird friends!

-19 this AM in NW Wisconsin and I still have open water for the birds and squirrels, (see picture). I was going to buy a heated birdbath but found the price to be a bit much for a bath that was smaller than I wanted so thought I'd try this option first. My “birdbath” is a large plastic plant saucer, it’s just deep enough for this heater. I have been using this heater since it got cold enough to freeze the water and have had open water ever since. If it’s nasty cold, like today, only part of the dish is open - but enough for a drink. This was a Great Buy. Got what I needed/wanted for a whole lot less than a heated bird bath.

I've had the unit for about a month. The winter has been pretty mild until now so it was difficult to say how well it works. It did keep a medium sized bird bath all water when others froze some nights. We just had arctic air roll in and it was -8 degrees overnight (the coldest I can remember). There is still water in the birdbath. The outside edges froze (probably about half the water) but the center is still open and birds have been drinking from it. It's working in the coldest temps we've ever had so I give it a thumbs up.

The heater keeps the water from freezing in the birdbath so birds are able to drink all winter. Only problem is the cord is a little too short to reach the ground so the weight of the connection to my extension cord pulls the heater to the edge of the birdbath and partly out of the water. I had to put something under the connection to lift it 6 inches off the ground to solve the problem but a 6 inch longer cord would be better.

We actually use this for our outdoor potbelly pigs water and it works great. No issues. Does it’s job and keeps the water from freezing.
