I'm not sure if I love this and it will help my short game, or if I hate it because it frustrates me while I work with it. I guess that is the name of the game with golf anyway ;) This is a long plastic guide that shows you where you are pulling your putts. The only thing I struggled with using this product is that the golf ball sits up on the plastic holder and I feel like I am not centering my putter on the ball due to the height difference from the ground. It is still fun to use in the house to work on my putts while the weather is cold.

Like most things in golf, some things work for some people and not others. This looked like an interesting device that might improve my putting so I asked Amazon to test it.

The Putt Trainer is 19 inches long. You put your ball on a little red circle near one end. There is a 16-inch small "runway" grove that goes straight down the middle of the device. The object is to strike the ball and keep it on the track until the end. Depending how the ball comes off the track tells you if you are opening or closing the head of your putter.

It takes a little while to be able to consistently hit the ball on the track. It reminds me that I have to keep the putter's face in the direction of the hole during the stroke. Like so many things in golf, I need to be constantly reminded of the proper technique. The Putter Trainer helps me with this task.

It has been a bad year for my putting skills, so I started looking for some aid, especially before dropping a lot of dollars on a new putter. I found this alignment guide which is supposed to help make sure the putter is square at impact. As soon as this came in, I started using it. It’s pretty cold here so I started indoors, dropped it on the floor, put the “cup” down in front and started hitting putts. Apparently, my putter was not square on impact as the first 20 or so attempts all went off one side or the other very quickly. With some concentration and practice I can now roll the ball down the center most of the time.

Online you can’t really tell the quality of this guide. It is solid and the attention to detail is good. The markings are nice, and I especially like the perpendicular lines (see picture) at the end that help you square up the putter when lining up. It is raised slightly in the center with a tiny groove the ball will travel down when a putt is hit perfectly square. It slopes off to both sides which exaggerates any slight miss to the left or right and makes it obvious the putter was not square at impact. Without the guide many putts you hit might go in or be just outside the line, but the guide helps so you are hitting it center cup all the time. The only minor issue I have is that inside, on carpet or a rug, the guide will slide when you rest the putter on it to line up. Easy fix, I just taped it down so it stayed steady.

The real test is to see if this has improved my putting on the course or not. Unfortunately, it’s a little cold and too much snow right now to test. I’ll keep practicing and hope for the best next time I get to go out and play.

It is what it says it is, a training aid to help you perfect your putting stroke direction by emphasizing when you do it wrong. I suspect countless hours on this and my clubface will be much more square to to the swing.

Only deducted a star because there really isn't much to this and it's not a novel idea.

Will it help? No doubt.

If you’re doing this type of putting training, I have observations: the old, std way was to get a long metal ruler and try to keep the ball on it. Effective. I find this fairly short rail (shorter than my 4’ rail by about a factor of 3) harder to track. It need not be labeled, so that part is useless. There is a depression that locates the ball at starting position, and a very narrow slot down the center is your target line. The target slot does very little to keep your ball in line, and once you “jump the rail”, it exacerbates the mishit, making it both frustrating and challenging at once. As my old piano teacher said, practice does NOT make perfect … PERFECT practice makes perfect. That’s the deal here.
Bonus: before you have any hope of making it to the end of the rail, much less holing a putt using this device, you will be forced to perfect your setup over the ball. If your line of sight isn’t established down the line, then your putter head will appear askew. Move your head (eyes) until the hole, and the alignment stick and your putter’s alignment mark all look to be perfectly straight. Your perception will be slightly different than mine, but you MUST find the line that “fits” your eyes, and then set up that way forevermore… Mike Malaska has a putting video on YT where he covers a ball marker, illustrating this point to BeBetterGolf, I think. If you line up 3 objects with a chalk line, and then stand over them like a putt, they will appear NOT in a line, until you move your eyes into proper position…so this, and this use this alignment tool to learn how to roll the ball end-over-end. You will hit every single mark you aim at…so from there, all you have to do is read the green and adjust speed! ;-). I mean, that’s all there is to it, right?!? Seriously though, the first step is hitting the line you aim for.
This little putting aid is a step up from a ruler, and comes with a silicone ring to simulate a cup, as well as a no-name ball (JIC you don’t have 500 balls lying around). I recommend you putt w/ your gamer ball…but still, nice touch, and I don’t personally know a single person who would t benefit from this putting aid, or one like it. Do what you want, but if unsure, you can do far worse than this one. You can combine with a “mirror” device at first and periodically to make sure that setup position gets etched in stone, and forever fixed in you mind.
