I have been very impressed with Technics headphones that I have used in the past so I had high hopes for these and don’t get me wrong, they are good, but I don’t think they are quite worth the hefty price tag. I am an audiophile and anyone who has fallen down that rabbit hole knows that it is an expensive hobby. Good sound equipment is pricey and I have spent thousands of dollars building my main sound system over the years so $1000 for a pair of headphones is not exactly going to turn my hair white from shock. That being said, I just don’t think these are quite at the level that would justify their cost.
First of all, and I’m trying to be open minded here because admittedly I prefer listening to music on a stereo instead of earphones but I get that isn’t always an option, these are earbuds. Referred to as IEM (in-ear monitors) by the headphone community but basically that’s just a fancy name for earbuds. I find earbuds in general to be a little awkward but most higher end headphones I have come across fit over the ear. Thanks to these earbuds I think I now understand why that is - you just can’t get the same sense of staging with an earbud as you do with larger headphones.
These earbuds are uncomfortable to wear because even though the buds themselves are lightweight they are connected to a cable and the cable is not some cheap lightweight cable, it is high quality so it’s a bit on the heavier side. I find myself looking for a clip or something to hold the cable on my shirt so that less weight is hanging from the earbuds. I’ve tried a few different pairs of pads in an attempt to make them more comfortable and help keep them from slipping out of my ear but I still haven’t found one that really feels like it fits comfortably and securely.
I have tried these with various combinations of different headphone amplifiers and LDACs and bluetooth receivers and listened to a range of music in different formats from MP3 to FLAC and WAV and music from hi-res streaming services, etc and the difference is negligible for the most part with a couple of exceptions. Using them with anything connected to bluetooth very noticeably deteriorated sound quality and using them on an mp3 player with no amp (ie directly connected to iPod) was a bit sad. Using these headphones with compressed music is a waste. I definitely recommend getting a good hi-res music player to go with these.
Are these headphones good? Yeah. There’s definitely a lot of detail and clarity. I noticed bass was a bit underwhelming unless I used a headphone amp with adjustable bass. When I audition headphones I always start by listening to Beethoven’s Symphony No. 7 in A Major, Op. 92 (particularly the second movement “Allegretto”) and I listened to it dozens of times with these earphones and I noticed that no matter what recording I was listening to it seemed like the room tone/atmosphere was extremely noticeable. You could here pages turning. The sound is detailed almost to the point of being distracting. The amount of clarity is truly impressive.
These earphones look elegant and the build quality seems good. I do not like the case they came with at all. The case is so cheap it almost seems insulting considering the cost of these earbuds. For a thousand dollars I would think you could at least get a case that zippers shut or something so that the earbuds and cables are protected when not in use.
Obviously these earbuds are designed for the dedicated audio enthusiast who doesn’t mind being tethered to their music source. These don’t have the convenience of wireless earbuds and they are built to do one thing and do it really well. To get the most out of these I recommend getting a good hi-res music player.
