This doesn't look like much, but it is probably the most efficient and effective pocket sharpener on the market. I've been hand sharpening tools since 1959. All things considered, it's the best I've used so far. I've used it with great success on my hand forged( by me) knives of D-2 , ATS-34, 52100 , W-2, O-1 and 5160. RC hardnesses between 59 and 61. It's equally effective on VG-1,VG-10, 154CM, AUS-8 and Sandvik cutlery steels. If you do your part, an edge capable of shaving will be produced. Apply some polishing compound to the back of the leather case and you have an effective strop for final finishing and touch up while working.(DuPont no.7 white works great)

Nearly Identical to Fällkniven DC4

Received the Dianova FNDC4 today, and at first glance it's nearly identical to my Fällkniven DC4 diamond/ceramic whetstone, up to and including the leather pouch bearing the Fällkniven logo, the clear plastic packaging with flap, and the minimalist black-print-on-white cardstock insert. Here are the differences I can detect:

- Pouch: The Dianova leather pouch is not as stiff as my original Fällkniven pouch, and the black surface seems as if it may be a separate layer on as opposed to being the actual smooth side of the leather. The Dianova pouch has a slightly solvent-y smell to it, unlike the Fällkniven pouch which smells like leather.

- Stitching: One stich has been dropped from the seam at the top of the pouch, but I don't see the stitching unraveling.

- Stone: The diamond side of the Dianova whetstone seems to be slightly rougher than on the Fällkniven stone; on the ceramic side, the Dianova stone has slightly more-rounded corners than the Fällkniven stone.

- Insert: The packaging insert appears to be identical, except that the Dianova insert is missing the phone and fax numbers from the address info on the back between the Fällkniven logo and the UPC barcode; the Fällkniven stone's package insert has both phone and fax. The Dianova barcode has a slight defect where the top portion of the digits at the bottom is ever-so-slightly stretched vertically, so that the top bar of the "5", for example, is slightly thicker/bolder than the middle or bottom, and slightly thicker than the horizontal bar on the "4".

- Packaging: There is a small amount of debris inside the Dianova packaging; it looks to possibly be from the sueded interior of the pouch.

Most or all of the differences above could easily be due to variations in manufacturing or minor cost-cutting. The pouch is really the most different from my original Fällkniven DC4 pouch, but mostly by its feel and lack of stiffness rather than its looks. The stone itself is so similar in weight, size, color, and feel that I do not think I could tell which was which if I had been handed them without knowing.

All in all, if the Dianova is a counterfeit, it's a pretty good one. We'll see how the stone holds up.

no oil, no water, just caveman it into a mirror polish. Iv'e used this to give a mirror finish to knives and gun parts when other stones, files and sandpaper left me wishing i had taken up other interests like crack cocaine or suicide. this sharpener actually gets my knives super sharp, but i use it for more than that, any sort of metal work that needs a high shine surface for lubricity ends up being completed on the dc4. Use it to fine tune shapes into metal, I used it to fit the mainspring housing on my 1911 and will likely use it to fit other parts. massively useful, and for the price, you will not find a better tool to sharpen a knife with.

I’ve been reading that Fallkniven had some quality control issues as of late in terms of their stones. Mine is no exception but it’s not that bad it’s just the glue job is a little bit off when it comes to the diamond plate connecting to the stone. But you have to look pretty close I’ve seen a lot worse examples.

That being said this is a great little portable stone. Light weight feels good in the hand and it has perfect course and fine sides for getting a good edge on the go.

This is probably not what you want to use at home you would want a much bigger stone where you can sit it on the table and use both hands to sweep the blade. But for being out in the bush and honing a dull edge this thing works great. It’s also the perfect size to fit in most sheaves stone pockets not too big but big enough to hold in the hand comfortably.

Mine is odd, it has a little lanyard hole in the diamond plate but not in the ceramic stone, so you can’t string anything through the lanyard hole.

As with any sharpening stone it takes a bit of practice to learn how to use it well. But once you have used it successfully a few times it becomes second nature. Don’t be afraid to scratch the ninth you can always polish the scratches out later if you’re concerned about the cosmetic appearance of your knife. Just get in there and go to town on it and you’ll find that eventually you have a razor sharp edge.

You can see in the picture how the glue job is a little messy and uneven. Not what I expect from Fallkniven, Usually known for their micron precision knives. You can also almost see how there’s no hole through the ceramic stone.

I was thinking about calling them and seeing if they would exchange it for a properly made one. My worry is if the glue is that sloppy, the two halves might eventually separate. Then again maybe all that extra glue will keep them together longer.
