Like others, I was unable to update the firmware or get music files to play via the built-in USB port.
After a *lot* of trial-and-error — and a few back-and-forths with Yamaha support, which yielded nothing of help — I was able to solve the problem by ordering a couple of older-generation (USB 2.0) flash drives. These both allowed me to update the firmware (to v1.37) and to play high-resolution audio files using the USB port.
Some issues remain, including the fact that — without selecting a specific folder on a USB drive — the playback order is chronological, i.e., based on the creation date of the audio files. This seems nonsensical to me other than for very casual playback situations. I would much prefer files to be played based on their filename, which would allow a much more easy reordering of them on a USB drive. Besides, if the idea was that the order of songs on an album, for instance, would track with their creation date, that is very often incorrect.
One other gripe with USB playback: it is possible to access individual folders and the music files contained in them using the remote, but the number of folders and files the player 'sees' is often much more than the actual files you see there, and the items are referred to by a number and not by the name you have given them while you're trying to navigate to a specific group. It's all quite confusing — and may be specific to the macOS platform — but be aware that this feature is not easy to use!
None of these issues will be of any concern to you if you never plan to use the USB functionality built into this player (to either update the firmware or play music), and otherwise the player performs very well with most of my commercial CDs; it will even make a decent attempt to play heavily-scratched CDs by failing quietly and jumping to the next playable portion without any nasty clicks or other distortions. I only ran into any skipping at all with my most damaged 'torture' CDs that I use for testing players, so that bodes well for any CDs you own that you have treated reasonably well!
In all other regards, it's a great little player, and the built-in DAC (digital-to-analog coverter) does an excellent job downsampling and playing high-resolution files such as 24-bit ones, all the way up to 96 kHz (the CD standard is 16-bit, 44.1 kHz, by comparison). The support from Yamaha was mostly lacking, but the response time was pretty good — so much better than many audio component manufacturers.
All in all, I rate it as a four-star product, and I'd recommend it to others. Just be aware of the above caveats if you plan on making use of the USB port.
