Buyer beware! The product title does not match what you will receive. The product is listed as a "USB 3.2 Gen 1" drive, but, you will receive a USB 3.1 Gen 1 external hard drive. Was it simply a mistake I and other people are receiving USB 3.1 drives? The likely answer is no. It appears a marketing tactic is at play.
In short, "USB 3.2 Gen 1" is simply a marketing term to relabel the old and slower USB 3.1 technology (introduced in 2013). When someone sees "USB 3.2" they are expecting a more current technology product that will provide data transfer speeds around 10-20 Gbit/s, whereas USB 3.1 (depending on whether it is the SuperSpeed+ or the non-SuperSpeed+ version) will cap out with a data transfer speed up to a maximum of 10 Gbit/s. In reality, that 10 Gbit/s claimed speed will likely more look like between 5-10 Gbit/s. This explains why when I was sending and pulling data from the drive it seemed so painfully slow. For example, you would see a clear performance difference if you were using a computer from 15-20 years ago compared to one from 2021 whether or not you are a techie person. The average user just wants a drive that is fast and uses the latest or at least fairly recent technology. This drive does not provide that.
In addition to the use of old technology, the drive is larger than other competitor products that provide rugged/durable protection. The large size is the result of claimed added protection, but, does it really provide any more real protection? (I personally like Silicon Power (SP) or ADATA products for their durability and dependability. They might not use USB 3.2 technology but they at least do not use tricky marketing terms to confuse or deceive customers.)
Lastly, there is no backup software included unlike many competitors offer. A drive at this high price point has to provide more than just the drive.
Overall, this is an overpriced drive that is slow and provides no value beyond competitor products. Additionally, it rubs me wrong when a company (G-Tech or someone) uses marketing tactics to trick or hide something. I recommend someone edits the title to say: SanDisk Professional G-Drive ArmorATD, 5TB, USB 3.1 (USB-C Connection Port), Portable Hard Drive.
I DO NOT RECOMMEND THIS DRIVE! I say all of this from the perspective of an advanced tech person with over three decades of experience. I have seen a lot of good and bad products throughout the years. This is just another product to add to my bad product list. It is also now a brand name I must watch out now for tricky marketing tactics. I hope my review helps with your decision. My goal is to provide a straightforward review that fair and true.
