As an individual who has purchased and used an awful lot of backpacking water filters for roughly 35 years now, I consider this a decent little filter that fills a void that seems to be left by many of the historical manufacturers that are no longer making this more traditional pump style filter. Or, they're making them very difficult to find or too expensive.
For the reference, I have used and owned Katadyn, MSR, and Pur branded water filters very similar in size to this.
For several years now, I have been using the squeeze type water filters where the water filter itself is ridiculously small and lightweight and you fill a bag and squeeze the water through it or allow gravity to work its magic over time.
I think this product fills a void and is probably priced about right if you want a pump style filter that can move a lot of water. As a matter of fact, if your backpacking and have access to mountain streams and so forth where the water is already quite clean or basically ready to drink, this filter will supply water without any trouble for a large group of scouts or larger group of people in my opinion.
I have used this filter and ran probably three or four quarts of water through it before I attempted to actually dump water directly into my water bottle for use while hiking. Tasted great, no concerns on my end. I'm hesitant however to give this more than four stars for a couple of reasons:
First, I feel that the rubber seals and so forth and general quality of the plastic housing are suspect for heavy use over time. The aforementioned brands and filters I had for several years from them seemed to be considerably better made, and capable of a lot more use and abuse over time. That said, they cost more than this filter 20 years ago!
Second, and related to the first, I just feel like access to the key filtration components is a little bit too open to damage or pollutants. I would prefer something quite a bit more sealed up even though the back flushing operation as given in the instructions is appealing.
The pump action seems to work fine, and I've had no issues but I do question how well this thing will hold up over time especially if it is used heavily.
My negatives aside, this is a great value and a pump that simply works and works well.
