Compact, but very slow data transfer on USB 3

This is my second 5 TB Seagate Hard Drive. One should note that the data transfer using USB 3 is very very slow. It took over 26 hours to transfer 2.1 TB of videos!!

Note too, that this device comes with a 3 year warranty. My first one died 3 weeks past the warranty expiration date! This, of course leaves no recourse, but I still needed a 5 TB drive, and this was the alternative. Figure about $30 per year for the privilege of having this storage, BUT BE READY AT THE FIRST SIGN OF TROUBLE TO SAVE YOUR DATA AND MOVE IT TO ANOTHER DRIVE.

Too slow to use

This item is unusably slow. I bought it to back up my laptop’s SSD, which has about 600 GB of data on it. The first 100 GB I dragged to the Seagate drive gave me an estimated time of “about a day” to finish.

I searched the item’s box and booklet for write speed specs, because I couldn’t believe the drive could really be that slow. Speed specs were nowhere to be found. I searched the Amazon item page for the specs. Also not posted. I read a few more reviews that mentioned the same problem and realized the drive must really be that slow, which explains its low price—and why write speed is carefully avoided in its description.

I tried reformatting it to a more Mac-friendly format, but it was just as slow. I will return this item, as I can’t find much use for the 2 TB if it takes 24 hours to transfer 100 GB.

For Macs and using Seagate as external backup drive with Time Machine... (1) be sure to open the "Mac" installer link after plugging in the driver. (2) Web link will take you to a website to Register product (do it), plus offer you a bunch of other trial products -- ignore those then close the webpage. Meanwhile, you should get an email saying you successfully registered your new Seagate product! (3) Try running Time Machine with the new driver selected. It may ask you to ERASE DISK -- which sounds scary, but do it! Then, try to run Time Machine backup again. (4) If you still get an error message about the driver's FORMATTING (NOT FORMATTED FOR A MAC, ETC), just eject, remount and try it again. This is how mine eventually worked just fine. (5) Note it does take 5+ HOURS to newly backup your data, so be patient as the progress bar remains blank ("preparing backup") for a really long time before it starts to chug along and count the megabytes.

I worked for one year to get my data and a month later it's all gone. This external drive didn't last more than a month. Purchased in Dec 2020 and by the 3rd week of January all of my files were gone except for a few. Blood, sweat and tears on all the work and time I expended. I WILL NEVER BUY SEAGATE AGAIN. I do have another Seagate that is older, but will back that up to something else. I will just buy My Book drives, never had a problem with them. I bought this drive cause it was small and easy to use, what a mistake!

Decent read speeds, but somewhat poor write speeds.

This review is for the One Touch 5TB Extern Hard Drive HDD. I had originally purchased this thinking it was an updated version of the Backup Plus style drive, which I thought was unavailable. Also being 7200 RPM I thought it would be a nice upgrade to seek speeds. Unfortunately this drive wont work for mine or everyones needs.

The read speeds were an improvement to a Backup Plus as I was getting around 250-270mbps on average with the One Touch which was nice to see, but the write speeds were averaging 50-60mbps. I could not get it to write any faster than that which was some what surprising. This simply will not work for me, but might be fine for others.

I am a big fan of Seagate drives in general, but I do feel there are better options out their at the moment where you spend a little more but get much better read and write speeds for the same capacity. Overall though this drive seemed solid and I am sure the read performance is pretty good if that is what you are needing the most.
