Xiegu G90 sets the bar high

I sold my Yaesu 817 rig and purchased this one as I always struggled to make SSB contacts. I've been making contacts on this new radio like crazy. I love the display, being able to see what others frequencies are in use with out having to listen. The best is the audio, the static is so much lower than all my other radios. The way the SDR was implemented really made a huge improvement. I have a Yaesu 857, and many times I have to turn on the pre-amp to make a contact, but not with this radio. The Xiegu G90 is a real performer. I've made dozens of POTA hunting contacts, which generally are low powered on compromised antennas, but this radio makes it easy. I'm surprised at how many contacts I've made on only 20 watts. The only time I run into trouble is when there's a huge pileup, of really loud signals, then it takes a little more skill with timing to make contact.

I've only had this radio for a short period of time, but I absolutely adore it so far. I'll update this review as I use the radio more, but so far, I love it. I got it as a Christmas gift in 2022.
I had done a lot of research and for me, it came down to either this or the Yaesu FT-891. The main deciding factor was the auto tuner. I probably could've benefited from the 100W output of the Yaesu, but the built in tuner means that if I need to, I could do something like a gutter antenna with a 9:1 balun at my apartment.
Currently, I have an end fed half wave antenna cut for 40m with a matching 49:1 unun. I haven't done any proper trimming of it yet, but the built-in tuner can do most of the heavy lifting. I do intend to trim it, most likely using the handy SWR sweep the G90 can do.
With that setup and the radio set to 20W, I was able to make it to the east coast with a 57 both ways voice communication on the 17 meter band. No mic compression either.
The only potential downsides of this radio are that the alternate functions are difficult to learn initially. This was eased in my case as I did my research before buying, but new buyers should be aware of this. Also, I didn't realize at first but the power was set to 1W out of the box. Nothing major, just something worth checking before your first transmission.

Could not be happier with my purchase. My only complaint is the screen could be a little larger. I have 20/20 vision it's still way to small. I added a cheap 200 watt linear amplifier to my rig made a ton of of successful international dx contacts on 10 meters! I'm getting great signal reports as well! Great starter radio and super portable. I carry mine around in a padded laptop bag! Buy it you will not be disappointed. Haven't had the opportunity to build an antenna for the lower frequency bands!
