This book is brilliant. It will help any therapist to become even better. IT lays out a rich evidence base for the role of interpersonal skills of the therapist in enhancing clinical outcomes. Although the authors never use these terms, what the book shows is that good therapists are wise and loving people with well developed spirituality that allows for the manifestation of "therapeutic presence," as Carl Rogers once noted.
Dr. Miller and Dr. Moyers write with conciseness and clarity, with sound referencing of the truths articulated about what is needed to help others heal.
Perhaps even more important is the excellent work in the book on how to improve our clinical skills through focused, intentional practice of skills such as empathy combined with feedback. Masterful. What may be missing is my own personal belief that personal therapy, healing, and spiritual practice also contribute to a therapist's wisdom, capacity to love, and thus effective interpersonal and clinical skills. What is critical is that therapists don't get better with experience unless they intentionally practice the skills in this book with feedback. May all therapists take heed!
This book should be essential reading for all therapists. May all clinical treatment settings adopt this book as a curriculum for professional development and incorporate the suggested training and feedback practices detailed in this book. Our clients and patients will be the better for it.

What is it that makes some therapists so much more effective than others, even when they are delivering the same evidence-based treatment? This instructive book identifies specific interpersonal skills and attitudes--often overlooked in clinical training--that facilitate better client outcomes across a broad range of treatment methods and contexts. Reviewing 70 years of psychotherapy research, the preeminent authors show that empathy, acceptance, warmth, focus, and other characteristics of effective therapists are both measurable and teachable. Richly illustrated with annotated sample dialogues, the book gives practitioners and students a blueprint for learning, practicing, and self-monitoring these crucial clinical skills.
