Ruined a perfectly good $250 sailing jacket. I bought this product to clean and renew three jackets that had started to lose their rain protection. Theses were: 1) a 3-yr old Gill Coastal jacket that had over 1000 miles of sailing use in all conditions; 2) 5yr old Marmot Precip shell; and, 3) a Body Glove snow boarding jacket of unknown age. All were in excellent condition and mildly soiled but had lost there water shedding properties to some extent. I followed the NikWax and clothing label instructions to the letter in a top-loading automatic washer. Settings were Permanent Press, Heavy, Warm/Cold at Mid water level. I pretreated some of the soiled areas per the instructions with undiluted cleaner. I did not dry between the Cleaner and Waterproofing. Results: the coats were covered in white flecks from 1/4" to dust size. At first I thought I had left a tissue in one of the pockets. A closer look revealed that the laminated layer on the Gill jacket had come off on the back. There was no sign of any wear or damage to the layer before this. The jacket is unusable since the layer continues to shed. The other jackets seemed undamaged and well-cleaned but, I cannot see the membrane layer on these since they are covered with a solid liner. I tested for water shedding and it did restore that very well. So, I cannot recommend this product and will have to claim compensation from the manufacturer. I do not understand why no one would have reported a similar problem previously. I feel deceived. I had to order a replacement jacket for an upcoming coastal trip.
Update: I contacted NikWax customer service and they responded to me very promptly informing me that it is inherent in the laminate construction of these jackets to fail like this over time (3 years of occasional use?). They state that the cleaning merely precipitated the failure of an already deteriorated material that was just held together by perspiration and grime. They offered to replace the NikWax product. Meanwhile, Gill, the jacket manufacturer, also responded immediately to my complaint and asked for the jacket to be sent to them for evaluation. Stay tuned.***update*** After inspecting the jacket, Gill offered to replace jacket at no charge. No questions except what color since original is no longer made. Hat off to Gill for outstanding support.
