First of all, I got this synth on for $279 a year or so ago at a local shop. The synth is definitely worth $399 or even $449 (inflation, global pandemic, chip shortage, etc. are why you're seeing pricing jump across the board for music gear). Anyway...
I never write reviews on Amazon, but when I saw another reviewer write "+really hard time coaxing good sounds out of the typhon because the oscillator section is too minimal," I nearly spit my tea out of my mouth. The Typhon is one of the best bang-for-your-buck mono synths on the market. The sounds I can "coax" out of this tiny box are simply amazing. The oscillators are versatile, diverse, thick, and crisp. The digital fx section triples its sound potential, and the mod matrix squares all of it. After crafting a brilliant patch, I can save it and load it up for any other production or live jam with my friends. If I had a time machine (one that could send me back to 2020), I would have bought 3 Typhons for $279. Seriously. Go watch some YouTube reviews.
I have a ton of gear and the Typhon is a piece I'll never sell on Reverb. It's that good.
It's a great synth that does a good job of addressing one of the biggest issues with mono synths stand-alone; they're dry and boring. The built in effects provide the needed depth and interest to get really cool sounds out of the thing without having to invest in external hardware. About the only serious fail on the box IMHO was their decision to not have the slider lights tied to the modulation etc. You could have displayed LFO's on there and such. I emailed them about this and felt the response was kinda weak, they were worried about PWM noise. Ok, then don't PWM the LED's, PWM analog current sources and let the current sources drive the LED's with reasonable filtering. I'm an audio hardware engineer, I know this would work cause I've done it myself. But ohh well, don't let that stop you from buying it's still quite awesome and the fact that it runs off USB allowing the use of a battery bank is also great!
Pretty powerful little synth for the money, I use mine as an FX processor for other synths. I gave it 3 stars because the synth itself leaves a lot to be desired. I have a really hard time coaxing good sounds out of the typhon because the oscillator section is too minimal.
Wow! My current midi controller doesnt plug into this, nonetheless I have been having fun tweeking the sounds inside with the nobs. Bought a new Arturia minilab... hopefully it works for this! Because it will be AMAZING!
