The world of mechanical keyboards is a deep rabbit hole, and I hoped this keyboard would provide a decent launching off experience. While the keyboard is very heavy (a plus in my book), and the keys satisfying, there are a couple major hangups that had me sending this back to Amazon.
The software running this is very bad indeed. You've seen complaints if you've read the other reviews, and largely I thought that what was listed there wouldn't bother me. It did. The largest bother was the fact that the keyboard lighting effects had to be reset every time the keyboard became unplugged. This may not be an issue to some, but I work with a laptop and a docking station, so it was almost every time I sat down at my desk that I had to make the preferred changes to the RGB lighting.
Which brings me to #2 -- the RGB lighting is really poor. The effects are poor. The control is poor. And most of all-- and I think this is the one that killed the whole experience for me -- the color quality is exceedingly poor. Approximating "white" in their software is a bit of trial and error. Pure white (#FFFFFF) bends hard toward a greenish hue, so you offset that by pulling back some of the green in the software profile. When you load your profile, you'll quickly realize that the color on screen is a very distant approximation of what you ultimately get. After a few more tries at approximating white, I ended up with something reasonable only to find out that the LED's themselves cannot hold color across various intensities. If you dim the LED, you get a different hue entirely. This is characteristic of extremely low quality LEDs.
I'll keep looking for the right keyboard, but it won't be from DROP. Their hearts may be in the right place, but they've served up a pretty hobbled disappointment here.
