*Update* - 3rd break in 3 months. This time, the handle on the large luggage just snapped off at the bolts that secure it to the luggage. This set is awful, and seems like it is disposable after a trip or two. Not what I was looking for at about $300.
WHAT YOU GET
This hardside set came two bags (20” and 24”). These bags all have the same features: hardshell exterior, 4 full spin wheels at the base, TSA zipper locks, telescoping handle and a zippered expandable midsection. The smaller (20”) bag is a suitable carry on-size for most airlines.
The biggest draw for me is the hardside exterior. The polycarbonate shell covers everything except the zippered extension in the middle. This gives you the confidence of your luggage contents are protected when your bag is tossed like a piece of garbage by the airline … it can take a beating. Even with the protective shell, the bags are remarkably lightweight.
The 4 spinning wheels at the bottom is a difference maker. Having lived with the 2 wheel variety of luggage for years, I thoroughly appreciated having the 4 spinning wheels that allowed me to move my bags through the slow TSA line without having to “tilt-and-tow”. The wheels are solid and spin effortlessly for a smooth, even glide. It was nice to be able to keep my bag right next to be rather than towing and parking through the line.
The TSA zipper locks are an added security feature. The lock is a device designed to accommodate the holes at the ends of the bag’s zipper. Easy to set the combo and use … it has a special keyhole to allow necessary TSA access in your absence.
These bags open to form two main storage compartments. Both compartments have a vinyl-like liner at the bottom that serves as a barrier to the polycarbonate shell. One compartment has a zippered mesh cover to keep the contents from spilling into the other compartment. The other compartment has a criss-crossing elastic belt that clip locks at the center to hold contents in place. Not only can you secure your “stuff” in each compartment but can prevent it from mixing together when the bag is zipped shut.
The expandable feature is a big plus. There is a second zipper that covers the circumference of the bag that allows the bag to expand. This allows you to overstuff the bag without mashing everything inside.
Our family used these bags on a cross-country trip a week ago and we were impressed with their performance. The protective shell allowed us to pack some delicate souvenirs with peace-of-mind. Our luggage was dropped by the airline prior to boarding on one leg of the trip and went through a driving rainstorm on the trip home … not a scuff or scratch and all contents were safe and dry. I also found the 4 wheels made moving through the airport easier and more enjoyable … the soft-gliding wheels rolled smoothly and effortlessly on all surfaces.
I was thoroughly impressed with every facet of the SAMSONITE CENTRIC LUGGAGE. The bags are lightweight, protective, expandable and easy to handle/move.
Because of this odor, I read the information tag that was attached to each and I noticed that this luggage is made of a plastic that has been tagged with the California Proposition 65 Warning which means ‘this product contains chemicals known to cause cancer, birth defects or other reproductive harm.’ Why would any manufacturer use this type of material to make a product? My first thought was to just throw it away in the garbage but then thought that do I want this type of stuff in landfills? Of course, this is a debate for another time. I did some research and the chemicals could have a very low count of harm. So a decision.. use or not use.
Anyway, back to the odor. I placed a couple of strong dryer sheets inside each, closed them and left them for a couple of weeks. The sheets took out the odor and left them both smelling nice. I took out the dryer sheets and closed them up again and will leave them like this for another couple of weeks to see if the smell returns. If the smell does not return, I will probably use them. They are nice.
The outer shell is thin but firm and should protect what is inside. I do like that each side of the luggage has a barrior to hold the items inside each half when the suitcase is opened so everything stays where it was placed. The wheels roll smoothly and you can either pull it or roll it at your side.
