I got this for our daughter, an artist, but got caught up in its pages so completely that I'm going to have to order another copy for my own home. Because how else will I learn that the color I am struggling to identify and describe is "the inside wing feathers of the kittiwake"? Or that that same glowing white-gray is also the color of the human eyeball?
So often I am disappointed by the print quality or the feel of the paper of a book. This edition exceeds my expectations. The paper is beautiful, the printing an accurate reproduction of its early-1800s original.
I confess I haven't yet cross-referenced the beautifully reproduced color squares to see if they are altered by the antique-ivory paper. Another good reason to buy myself a copy of this book. (That white-gray did seem to be a close likeness of my own eyeball viewed in winter light.)
Reportedly Charles Darwin took a copy of this book with him to use as reference on his voyage of discovery. I like to think he appreciated it as much as I do.

Read & Co. presents this new edition of Werner's Nomenclature of Colours. First published in 1814, this small volume comprises a collection of 110 swatches displaying nature's colour palette together with their poetical descriptions.
In the 18th Century, German geologist Abraham Gottlob Werner set out to establish a standard reference guide to colour for use in the general sciences. Scottish flower painter Patrick Syme later enhanced and extended Werner's work to include all of the most common colours or tints that appear in nature, with each colour swatch accompanied by examples from the Animal, Vegetable and Mineral Kingdoms.
The resulting work was used by many scientists, explorers and anthropologists to further their studies, including Charles Darwin during his time on the HMS Beagle. Werner's Nomenclature of Colours is considered the predecessor of modern systems such as Pantone and has even inspired heritage paint ranges from the likes of Dulux and Farrow & Ball.
Read & Co. is republishing this beautiful little volume in a new facsimile edition and has taken great care to reproduce the original text and art for a new generation of artists and scientists.

The color swatches are a disappointment and well, tiny.

Wonderful concept, but I was disappointed with the end product. I don't feel ripped off but I probably would not have bought it if I could have looked at it first.

I love art and colour. This had very few words and if it’s going to be a visual book please make it bigger. It’s so small.
