Backstory: I have a blue heeler/pointer mix rescue that I adopted recently. She is around 6-8 months old. Whoever mixed those two breeds clearly just wanted to watch the world burn. As an adult, she will need 1-2 hours of exercise per day. Right now, she only needs about 30 minutes, twice per day. No problem, right? Just take her for a walk/jog twice a day, right? WRONG. Somebody did a number on this poor thing. She is afraid of nearly all people. I can't get her to walk more than one or two houses down the block. Yard exercise is great. But I need to wear her out so she doesn't burn down my home.
This thing arrived today. I immediately opened it up and headed out to the yard. She still hasn't learned to drop it after she catches it. But we are working on the "drop" command generally, so I expect improvement in that area. Pro Tip: Put the top end (where the rope connects) on the ground after the dog catches it to prevent the dog from yanking the pole out of your hand. Fifteen minutes later, she's passed out on my office floor, breathing heavy, and I'm maybe a bit dizzy from going in circles. Frankly, she would have kept going if I didn't put a stop to it. This is exactly what I needed. A tired puppy is a happy/well behaved puppy.
Again, I cannot speak to longevity or sturdiness. But it is lightweight, easy to hold, and handled lots of chewing/pulling without any impact today. I'll update if that changes. I'm very excited to show my toddler how to use this. He loves playing with her but she gets too riled up. This can be a good way for him to play with her from a distance.
Concerns: We are working with the puppy on not chasing the cat. My hope is that she'll burn off all of her energy and desire to chase by playing. (After all, we play fetch just fine. That is a prey game, right?) I'll be watching carefully to ensure she doesn't *increase* her tendency to chase the cat.
When the weather is nicer, we use this outside, too. It's nice when you don't have the time for a long walk and the dog needs to get some exercise.
A problem for some may be that your dogs do not care to chase the lead. We have one who always will. Another will chase if we put a favorite toy on it. And the third dog stands there and looks at the other two like "What are you doing?"
We've purchased two of the other kinds of leads - thinner pole and line. Those both got destroyed quickly. The pole snapped. Duct taping worked for a bit. But that wasn't ideal. The line was thin and eventually snapped.
This flirt pole is definitely better than those others.
It's durable PVC pipe vs fiberglass rode. And the line is made of a thicker elastic cord.
However, if we let the dog have this alone, she will destroy it. If we are not using it with her, we store it where she cannot find it. She will chew the toy right off the line if left alone with it. And, she's found it in the past and done that.
You could probably repair (or even build one) yourself. IMO, it's not worth the hassle. This is well made and reasonably priced. We will buy another one in a year or so when this one gets destroyed.
I kept seeing people recommend trying a flirt pole and after looking at different brands this one seemed to have the best reviews and it just looked the most durable.
Since she’s a standard we got the bigger size so she can continue to use it as she grows. She loves it, my husband and I love it, and our kids love it! She was able to play with it for quite a while and went down for a nap right after. My husband and kids love it because it allows them to safely play with her without getting nipped by a teething puppy. I love it because I can exercise her more and it gives me moments of peace after a play session.
It feels very durable and the rope is thick so she can’t tear it quickly. Feels good to hold and it’s even easy for my smaller than average 8 year old to hold and play with her with.
She still has a few more weeks until her final set of vaccines and this product is already helping tremendously with energy levels. So, so happy I found it. Easily the best toy we’ve bought for her!
The bungee cord definitely has a stretch to it and it’s durable, so is the pole itself, I am very careful not to allow her to tug on it in case it does slip from her mouth it could easily retract back and hit me or her very hard, causing injury. It is called a flirt pole, the object of this toy is to let her chase and run to tire her out not to use it as a tug toy. In case she does get a hold of the tassels and tries to tug on it I quickly hold it from the knot of the toy as to not allow the cord to stretch.
The reason behind the 4 starts is the tassels, I wish it was more like a light weight plush sort of toy animal like a fox or squirrel instead of tassel to keep her interested more, since she has a very strong prey drive. The 2nd reason is because the squeaky toy inside the tassel didn’t last long in her mouth. The plastic broke quick and it no longer squeaks.
