Is this a true Gillette Razor?

Yes, this is the first Double Edge razor set sold by Gillette in the US since the late 1980s. In 1901, King C. Gillette altered the shaving experience forever with the invention of the first safety razor. Now, more than a century later, Gillette is celebrating the holiday season by releasing the Gillette Heritage – Inspired Double Edge Safety Razor. This premium 3-piece razor set is inspired by the original 1929 Gillette double edge razor and is the perfect gift for those looking to elevate their shaving experience.

Will there be any re-issues of previously released models (like the Superspeed)?

At this time there are no plans to re-issue any previously released double edge safety razor models. This is currently the first Double Edge razor set sold by Gillette in the US since the late 1980s.

Will the new razor have the classic date code etched on the bottom of the razor head like vintage models?

The Gillette Heritage – Inspired Double Edge Razor does not contain a date code on it.

Why wasn't a "classic" design like the twist-to-open Superspeed used?

This specific razor is simply inspired by the original 1929 Gillette double edge razor. The Gillette Heritage – Inspired Double Edge Razor features a premium chrome plated handle inspired by the classic “Bar” handle and brings a historic design to your daily shave.

Where is the razor manufactured?

The blades are manufactured in Russia, the handle is made in the USA and the capguard is made in Germany.

What materials is the razor made out of?

The blades are stainless steel and the handle is a chrome plated alloy.

How to use a double edge safety razor

1. Prepare the skin by taking a warm shower followed with a pre-shave oil.

2. Lather up with your favorite shave cream.

3. Place the razor perpendicular to the face, allowing the curved top of the razor head to contact the skin.

4. Slowly lower the razor handle to the proper 30 degree shaving angle.

5. Hold the skin taut by using your free hand to stretch the skin away from the direction you are shaving.

6. Hold the razor firmly in your hand to guide the direction of the shave without pressing too hard. The weight of the razor should be sufficient pressure.

7. Begin your shave by shaving with the grain, using short choppy strokes. Rotate the side of the blade after every stroke then rinse blades once both sides have been used.

8. The coarser and thicker your hair, the shorter and choppier the strokes will need to be. Always use short, choppy strokes when shaving the jaw line and chin areas.

9. If needed, re-lather and shave lightly across or against the grain. Rinse with cool water.

Great for Beginners and Black Men

A little bit about myself: I'm relatively new to wet-shaving. I'm an African American (Black) male that has very sensitive skin along with coarse & curly facial hair. Shaving has typically been hell for me to put it lightly. BUT, the new Gillette DE Razor is probably the best thing I've ever shaved with (be that safety razor, electric razor or cartridge razor).

In the past I've shaved with the Parker 22R, Vikings Blade Chieftain, a Gillette Fusion Proglide, Philips Noreleco 3600, Panasonic Arc3, and Arc5. This razor blows all of them out of the water. It's extremely light and small; thus making it easy to manipulate. The guard of the razor allows you to easily make contact between the blade and skin at the perfect angle without allowing you to accidentally press the blade to hard into your skin. My first shave with this razor was the easiest, fastest and most pleasant shaving experience I have ever had in my life.

In short if you are new to wet-shaving or a Black man looking for an alternative to trimmers, cartridge razor or Bevel this is the razor for you in my opinion.

Gillette Hasn't Forgotten It's Roots

Received this in the mail today and I have one word to describe it. WOW!! Gillette has made a comeback to the double edge razor game. And the comeback sends a strong message, that they haven't forgotten their roots. This razor has a good weight, and really nice knurling on the handle. Can tell this is built to last. Very easy to hold even when hands are wet. Good balance and easy to control. Falls somewhere between a Merkur 34C and an Edwin Jagger DE89 in terms of the razor head and aggressiveness. Used it with a derby blade and the shave couldn't have been better. Skin was BBS with no nicks and cuts. This razor definitely has a place in any Shavers Den. I love that the razor comes into 3 pieces and the travel case is really nice and sturdy. A new top favorite for me. Well done Gillette! I'm glad to see you getting back into the DE razor game and hopefully this will be the first of good things to come. Grab one while you can, you won't be disappointed!

First Gillette DE razor release since 1988 which is pretty cool. Kind of special opening up box for first time. The razor head is not Gillette made but a proven German design nonetheless. This razor gets the job done, not aggressive yet not too mild either. Anyone owning the Mühle R89 and Edwin Jagger will be familiar with the shave. Presentation box is very nice and handle weight, finish and knurling are very old school Gillette.

Nice offering and a safe re-entry into DE razors for Gillette.

C’mon fellas, re-release the Old Type, Tech, 195, Slim and Super Adjustables. I’d be happy with just one of those though.

Five Stars For The Case

The reproduction of a 1930s Common Bar handle is also a “heritage” move by Gillette. It doesn’t look like the company has any intention of producing any of its own safety razors, though. There’s just no money in it. Few guys use them and the margins are slim.

But producing a fitted case that forms exactly to Gillette’s 1930s 3-piece razors with the Common Bar handle was a welcome move by the company. I already have a Muhle R89 so the razor head is redundant for me. It shaves fine but isn’t in my top 5. The handle is a neat piece, very close to a real Gillette handle. Nice reproduction. Too bad nobody’s making a serious reproduction of a Gillette Britain “Raised Flat Bottom” head or other classic head of pure Gillette design. Would have been great to put in this package.

The attached image is my old Long Comb NEW type with the Common Bar for reference. Fits the case perfectly. The gold plating wore off the copper cap decades ago. Very steampunk. Retro cool.

So, four stars for the bone stock Muhle/Edwin Jagger 89 head, 5 stars for the fun vintage retro handle and case. Next Christmas if you guys find a small manufacturer doing copies of the RFB or the NEW Deluxe or long comb NEW head, put that in the package and price accordingly. You’ll sell out the run again.

They're back!

I'm somewhat new to wet shaving, but I've built up a small army of razors: 1940's Gillette Ball End, Global Shave Club Replitech (Gillette Tech Replica), WCS safety razor, Vikings Blade Godfather, Rockwell 6S, Van Der Hagen and a Vikings Blade Chieftain Jr. Aside from the Rockwell, this is my favorite razor. It gives me close, nick free shaves without any razor burn. I love doing 3 pass shaves, but I don't feel they are absolutely necessary to get a smooth shave with this razor. While the head is much thicker than the 1940's Ball End, this still gets under the nose just fine. Gillette is back! Hopefully they will continue and renew their line of safety razors. Can't wait to see what will come next!
