Good Ending2020年11月15日 - 已在美国亚马逊上发表
Just finished this book today. I think it was difficult to follow, details were hard to understand. The author seemed hesitant to use plain talk, sort of hedged around using plainer language. I always try to finish a book once I start but this one was a challenge.
Couldn’t get through it2020年11月5日 - 已在美国亚马逊上发表
I’m surprised at the other reviews. The story is sluggish and really depressing. After 179 (out of 500) pages, the plot has hardly moved. If it was going to grab me, it should have by now.
A family under the iron control of a sociopath.2021年1月3日 - 已在美国亚马逊上发表
This was a well written novel about a family in Berlin that experienced abuse from a sociopathic father and husband that was so extreme that they fled to East Berlin only to be found and returned by the man who proved to be so powerful they had no recourse. The mother disappeared. The story revolves around the daughter, who had Downs Syndrome, trying to find out what happened to her. The reader gets caught up in her struggle, while her brother tries to protect her, tho he is traumatized almost to catatonia. The reader also gets to see a bit of what it was like in those two cities in the 70’s and 80’s.
Had to finish this one...2020年11月8日 - 已在美国亚马逊上发表
I know little of history that deals with life in Berlin before the wall came down. Thankfully, I have no first hand knowledge of spousal abuse. But, I do know the binding love between a mother’s heart and the hearts of her children. I am learning about Down’s syndrome from my new grandchild. This book deals marvelously and hopefully with all of these. Thank you, Ms. Ellory.
Heartbreaking.2020年11月17日 - 已在美国亚马逊上发表
This was a difficult book to read. The subject matter is gut wrenching, but you get so emotionally involved with the characters that you must keep reading. It tells of an important social problem that most people don't want to discuss.
