I was a little concerned by one of the negative reviews I'd read about this device on the Amazon site but those concerns were quickly allayed. I also had a concern that my motherboard's M.2 slot might not be compatible as it is an NVMe slot and not a SATA slot. That too immediately went away. It was plug-and-play all the way, baby!
I was also concerned because I had recently purchased a 6-port PCIe controller from Amazon and it worked fine until I tried to configure software RAID (through the operating system) on it. That controller worked fine when writing to one disk at a time but when I wrote to the RAID array, the system bogged down and the array went away until I rebooted the system. That was a terrible experience. This controller, however, is handling the software RAID like a champ!
It does have problems when I write a file larger than about 100GB. I'm using this 5-port controller in my Server 2012 iSCSI target (SAN) computer. When I tried to move my .VHD files from one disk to another, the .VHD files that were 100GB and less copied fine but the ones that were 400GB and greater failed after about 5-minutes. I got around this problem by recreating the virtual disks and then copying the contents from one disk to another. It handles lots of smaller files very well. Not sure why the huge files fail but fortunately, my file copying needs never exceed 60GB at the most and most of the file activity is normal (little) stuff (Word Docs, text files, movie and music files, etc.).
I definitely recommend this controller to anyone who has a free NVMe M.2 slot on their m-board, who needs more drive capacity.
