I've been using the Helios 300 for the last few weeks to put it through its paces. I want to start by saying that I've never been a laptop owner before but I've always wanted a gaming laptop. In the past I've always just built my own desktops because I didn't need anything portable. As I've been working toward becoming a software developer though the need to be able to work on the go with a powerful machine has become more important, so I finally took the plunge and got my first laptop. Below I'll tell you why it was the Helios 300.
Here are a list of pros:
-performance is great, especially for the price.
-Good thermals. My unit has great thermal performance. I've seen one spike on the cpu at 85 degrees. Under a heavy load my cpu is usually in the 70's with the GPU in the mid to high 60's.
-Build quality is solid, no creaking when you pick up the device. Even the plastic bottom panel feels good in your hands.
-Comfortable keyboard and trackpad, enough said.
-Good display. Your mileage may vary. I've heard of some units having some bad back-light bleed. Mine has some, however once I lowered the brightness to 75-80% it was gone. The screen is also plenty bright even at lower brightness settings.
-Decent battery depending on how you set up your machine. When I need to just focus on productivity on battery I take the display brightness down, and switch from 144hz to 60 hz. I've also gone through some steps to optimize windows. I can easily get 4 and a half hours on a full charge. In one session I had been working for 5 hours and had 20% battery left. That's more than enough for me.
Fan's can get loud when you ramp them up. They're actually not as bad as some of the YouTube reviewers would have you believe. That being said you do have the ability in the Acer predator sense software to adjust the fans manually to find a balance between thermals and acoustics. While gaming I usually have my fans between 60 - 80% depending on the ambient room temp. This tends to give me decent thermals with a noise level that isn't overly intrusive.
The only con:
-The power supply is a tad small. Occasionally I'll see the battery drain while gaming. After doing some research this is apparently by design. 99% of the time the 180w brick is enough. To be fair I've never seen the battery discharge below 96%. In some cases it's back up to 100% just a few minutes later. It was still a shock for me to see and would prefer a 200 to 230w brick instead.
Overall the Helios 300 really impressed me. They didn't seem to skimp on anything quality wise when they made this device. I'll update my review if anything changes. If I could I'd give it 4 and a half stars. I'd give it 5 if they included a slightly larger power brick.
