My boys (ages 6, 9 and 12) love Hot Wheels and they were super excited about getting this set. They especially love crashing the cars together to see which car can be the last one standing, so this seemed like the perfect gift.
The set came in a box that was probably a bit too small because the tracks were bent to fit inside. These bends made the track performance very inconsistent. One track was squeezed a bit so cars often got pinched and slowed down or even stopped while going through that section. Another was twisted so that cars fall off. Even after trying to bend them back into shape for a couple of hours we could not get a car to complete the track more than 3 times before falling off. Sometimes just the rolling accelerators twisted the car and turned it upside down. In 2 hours we *never* got both tracks to work long enough to even get a single crash.
Even if it had worked, my boys thought it was too loud. It is by far the loudest toy I have ever heard. It might have just been our unit but it sounded like a leaf blower. We had to keep turning it off as we tweaked and twisted the track back into shape. My boys can tolerate all kinds of loud noise (3 boys can make a lot of noise!) but they were really annoyed by the sound.
In the end, my boys thought that even if it had worked it would have been "kind of boring" (their words). They would prefer a version with a little more strategy and skill, like one where they could control the speed of their car or something like that. They just couldn't imagine it being much fun after just a couple of hours, and neither could I, so we sent it back. We bought a Carrera slot car set instead and they like that a lot more. It is quieter, and offers them control, strategy, and skill (though there is a learning curve, especially for the 6 year old).
