We're now in the first week of November, 2018. It's been used very lightly, mostly just carried around in my pocket. Now it's misbehaving, writing slower, in the 40-50 mB/s. That's a very short operational lifetime of about 6 months.
I needed a USB3.0 128GB thumb drive to store large backup files (20-30GB files). I made the mistake of buying a Samsung because it looked so cute. BIG mistake. Returned it 2 hours after it arrived in the mail. Here's a link to my 1-star review of this Samsung:
Having returned the Samsung, I shopped around again and chose this one. It's a bit expensive, but it promised good performance. And it delivered. Upon receipt, I ran the H2Test program to verify capacity and speed. Its write speed was a constant 95 mBytes/sec (compared to the 20-30 mB/s of that horrible Samsung). It's read speed was a constant 205 mBytes/sec. I then reformatted again, and filled it with 103GB of LARGE backup files. Those were written at an average speed of 197 mBytes/sec. The drive was thus under constant write/read operation for a good 20+ minutes, at the end of which it was barely warm (unlike the Samsung which became boiling hot within a couple of minutes).
LOVE it! I am very satisfied with this thumb drive. Will it last a long time (some are flimsy and don't last long)? I don't know. But it does look sturdy and I hope that it will.
After about 48 hours I saw the first signs on the screen of Windows 10 actually having booted...
I know my USB3 ports are good and quite fast. However there is a serious issue with that memory stick read and especially write speed. The same task using the 64GB Sandisk worked flawlessly and the system booted from the USB within about minute.
The two test images show that there is a serious write speed issue with the Patriot "supersonic rage" 64 GB stick compared to 64 GB SanDisk. All marketing scream and no substance!
I will have no choice other than to return it.
It's portable and cheap (which is why they can't be a substitute for Portable SSD or Main drives)
The USB Protocol(s) are slow when moving multiple small files (example: if you move a single 10 Gb file - you will probably see something close to 200 MB/s speeds on the Write cycle. If you move 300 files that equal 10 Gbytes - then you are asking the USB protocol to answer 300 separate request / depending on file sizes? You will be disappointed with the speed drop).
These are not INTEL Optane 3D X-point drives (which handle multiple request and fast). I am not an Intel Shill... but hope this helps
