Now if you are saying, 'well I have reached full maturity in regard to my emotional development' please be advised that I just turned 70 and continue to discover much I did not know about my on-going emotional development even at this advanced age.
The writing is quite elegant and eloquent, so the narrative flows very nicely. I have already ordered multiple copies for friends and family, and in each case am recommending that they pass the book on to their children when they are done. By children I would suggest starting at ages of 18 and up. Enjoy the journey

1. Content is some old ideas and some novel ideas put together in interesting ways. I always get books from library and only buy them when I want to keep them for life and routinely read. This one made the cut.
2. I really love good writing. Such excellent writing.

Understanding yourself can be a harsh road to go down but Alan's book is so throughly compassionate and explains things in a way that makes sense. Expanding self understanding and compassion to the people in your life, helps build a closer bond with those people. We aren't all bad, just ignorant. This book teaches you what you need to know to be self aware and see the struggle in others.
I recommend this book to everyone in my life and to you if you're thinking about ordering it.

Despite the fact that this book is about emotional intelligence, it is very much NOT a touch-feely self-help book -- and I say this as someone who writes touchy-feely self-help for a living. This more practical, straight-forward writing style and presentation makes the book especially accessible to the folks who most need to read material about emotional intelligence.
...Dare I say men? Yes, I dare. This book is very much male-accessible self-help. The topics (self, others, relationships, work, culture) are presented in a very straight-forward manner, with full index and citations in the back. This isn't fluffy work, and the writing style is plain and clear with a focus on reason, clarity, and philosophy. But it's not stuffy! Everything feels clear and easy to digest.
It's a lovely hardback (no jacket), with the bold cover feeling a bit Monty Python-esque. The paper stock is super thick, and the whole presentation is gorgeous and great for gifting. I could see this being a great gift for a graduate.
As for me, I'm going to keep this in the bathroom, where I hope my 10 year old son will flip through and glean little tidbits of value. It's way over his reading level, but it's a book that you can flip open to any page to get a quick hit of knowledge.
