Nice and fast 10GbE ethernet adapter for Thunderbolt machines

Got the SFP+ version of the adapter (QNA-T310G1S). This was a pre-loved (used) unit that really looked like new. I’m working from a Windows 11 machine connected to a Netgear MS510TX switch via 10GbE SFP+ twinaxial direct attach cable.

After I plugging the adapter, windows 11 recognized it right away and installed its driver. The next step was to download and upgrade the device to its latest Marvell firmware. The upgraded completed very quickly. Now it's running 3.1.121 firmware. After a final reboot, I was back on business. Note that the Windows PC already Thunderbolt enables, had latest thunderbolt firmware and drivers.

I have several VirtualBox Virtual Machines hosted in a Synologic NAS. So I wanted to increase the connection speed to the NAS. To test my setup, I started a VM running Lubuntu 22.04 LTS and started a job to build Linux Kernel 6.1.4 with some custom teaks. The process started and ended quicker than before. The network connection was stable and fast. I’m happy with the purchase.

This is a review for the QNA-T310G1S, Thunderbolt3 to SFP+ adapter (rose gold). Not to be confused with the QNA-T310G1T, Thunderbolt3 to 10GBASE-T (RJ-45) adapter (silver).
It has a Aquantia AQC100 10Gig chip inside (vs AQC107 on the T310G1T)

I've tested it on Windows, OSX, and Linux. It works great on each! It was plug n play on MacOS and Linux. The adapter appeared immediately after I plugged in (or after reboot).

Getting Windows was not as simple. First the connection to the adapter via Thunderbolt needs to be "enabled" in the Windows settings (disabled by default due to security). Next, it needs a driver. Aquantia (the maker of the chip) was recently bought out by Marvell in 2019, so Windows Update / Device Manager couldn't automatically find/download the driver. The QNAP quickstart guide shows a link to the Aquantia driver download page, but it's long dead now. Search for "AQtion Windows 64-bit driver" on your favorite search enging to find the driver on the new Marvell drivers site. It's the Aquantia AQC100. After driver installation, the adapter showed up under Network Adapters.

I also used the firmware update utility from Marvell to update the firmware from v. 3.1.57 to v. 3.1.109.

I'm getting a solid 9.4 Gbps (10Gbps with overhead) on the iperf3 test on each OS. I tested with a 10GBASE-T (RJ45) transceiver, 10GBASE-SR (LC fiber) transceiver, and passive DAC cable. All of them work similarly. The blue LED lights up when connected to PC via Thunderbolt3. The green/orange LEDs light up when transceiver is inserted into SFP+ port.

The 10GBASE-T transceiver gets very hot after a few minutes inside the QNAP adapter, like I can't touch it for more than 1s. The heat is disappated through the QNAP adapter, and the connection doesn't drop, but the heat is likely not good for the QNAP adapter over the long term. That's likely why they added a fan to the 10GBASE-T version (QNA-T310G1T). I'll be using mine with a DAC cablegoing forward.

Good performance for the money

I bought both the QNA-T310G1S (SFP+) and QNA-T310G1T (N-BaseT) versions. For the SFP+ one, I used an OM5 multimode fiber patch cable from RS with a pair of 10GBase-SR SFP+ Transceivers from 10Gtek. The N-Base-T one was hooked up to a 3-metre Cat 8 ethernet patch cable. Performance seemed roughly on par, with both getting above 9000 Mbps speeds on downloads and over 8000 Mbps on uploads in most cases on Windows 10. Also worked with similar speeds on my Macbook Air (Big Sur Ver. 11.5) with Apple's Thunderbolt 3 to Thunderbolt 2 cable connected to Caldigit's TB3 dock. The dock is needed to power the adapters, otherwise they don't work. Only difference is that the SFP+ adapter is fanless and runs cooler and the N-BaseT one has a fan which runs 24/7 due to the heat generated. That doesn't bother me as the noise gets drowned out when I have my Dyson desk air purifier on. One thing to note was that when I upgraded the AQC firmware to Version 3.1.121 from the Marvell support page, that bricked my SFP+ adapter. Got the 'Ethernet doesn’t have valid IP configuration' prompt on my laptop. Couldn't roll back the firmware for some reason either. Asked QNAP tech support, and after some testing, their network guys acknowledged that version of the Marvell AQC firmware had issues. Have RMA-ed the SFP+ adapter and am waiting for QNAP to fix it. Using the N-BaseT version in the meantime which works perfectly on the out-of-box the firmware.

Update: QNAP repaired the SFP+ adapter and it is working as per normal again.

Unit arrived used, was filthy, and without a working Thunderbolt cable

I purchased a new device. The unit showed up in a plastic bag with the wrong cable, as opposed to new and in the shrink wrapped box like all the others I’ve purchased.

The fact that it was filthy and clearly used was sub-standard at best.

The device would not start with the wrongly included cable.

This worked great. The only issue I had was that I went to send the link for the device to a coworker and found that the price had dropped almost $200.00.
That left a really sour taste in my mouth.
