Excellent attempt at an impossible task

History obviously impacted our ancestors. Doing genealogy requires an understanding of the historical environment. The author provides great information about epidemics, population changes, etc. but all of this, while interesting, will probably not help you figure out why your ancestors moved from point A to B. It would take a lot more information than you will find in this brief volume. You will find it interesting reading but not too helpful for genealogy.

If you don't have a magnifying glass, the print in this book is too small to be of use. They feature it is small, however, if the small is not easily readable, it fails it usefulness.

I found this little book to be such a surprise and I have it desk ready when working on my family history. Sometimes I look up historical facts or browse a few pages. It is also easy to take on research trips. Aside from important dates, names and places it also has foods, songs, and other interesting information to define an era in American History.

This little book is chock full of fascinating details about our country as it grew and changed from the 1700's through the mid '40's. Organized by years into six chapters, there are maps, charts, lists, and paragraphs about immigration, battles, wars, diseases, population statistics, major events of each era, census data, statehood info, famous people, cultural tidbits, music, prices of ordinary products.......and the list goes on. Any genealogist who wants to add to his or her understanding of the forces that shaped their ancestors' lives will be delighted with this book. An excellent resource that I would recommend to anyone involved in genealogy or simply for anyone who wants a capsulized version of our American history.

Disappointing

I thought it might actually have timelines or anything other than short lists of some events with a date following and absolutely no other info.
