The strongest side of this phone is its dual LTE. That's what i was looking for. Right now there's only a handful of dual sim phones that can support LTE in both sims, and can switch it automatically(it would seem) based on priority. I haven't verified the data failover part though yet, if it smooth or not etc. So my use case is to have two lines, have my google voice phone forwarded to them, and have cumulative coverage of two major networks.
What's more, as far as i can tell, this is the only dual phone in existence that should support US cdma/lte carriers. It has sprint and verizon bands. In theory, because my attempt to activate a verizon card failed -- verizon wouldn't activate this IMEI. But it looks like there's a good chance this phone would run an already activated verizon sim -- at least until verizon filters out it again that is, which is not happening immediately. But it should be able to support verizon VoLTE (again, in theory).
Anyhow, to have cumulative ATT and TMobile coverage (which activated without a problem at all with tracfone) works for me well enough. I seem to visit quite many spots where one works but not another and vice versa. Or both work but only one has a decent call quality. Even more so for data. That's why i bought this one.
What else is good? Looks modern. Screen is not OLED-ish of course but bright enough in the sun (brighter than my previous LG flex 2 it replaces was). Android 8.1, frequent updates (I installed the late september one which came OTA). I can attest that my special edition does have F/1.7 camera (same as in PRO variant) even though description says it has F/2.0 one (as in the regular edition of z2).
With the september update, i don't experience any restart bugs other people mentioned. Battery management seems to be good. No heat build up noted.
No bloat!.. You can say it again: stock android, 0 bloat!.. (of course we don't know about possible spywares :) oh well. I don't log into my banks from any phone. My old LG firmware gad a spy on search query logging too fwiw.
Price. Price is good for what it is. Assuming it lives at least 2 yrs (my LG barely made it to 2.5 yrs before it dropped dead).
Nice radio mode. Not for audio connoisseur types by any means, but nice and rich reception.
Oh. And there's in fact 3mm plug (they provide USB-C adapter). I personally like this, just a single interface for it all. i put adapter to my regular samsung phones and just keep it there, this works without any inconveniences. I don't see it as a negative as some have mentioned.
Even with latest FW and F/1.7 upgrade the bokeh algorithm isn't really dual camera bokeh but is the same old blur vignette. Nonsense. Are they fixing that?.. they are not promising anything as far as i can tell from existing conversations.
Quite a bit of motion blur for some reason. autoexposure shutter speed issues? No options to tweak the exposure trends or even manual mode found... Others also mentioned unreasonably slow shutter.
Also, even though the camera seems to have acceptable noise performance, the denoiser is still dialed up quite a bit and fights with sharpening algorithm for spheres of influence so hard that it looks at times grotesque with oversharpened areas mixed with over-denoised, blurred areas, with no attempt to gradually change from one to another, and it looks terrible . And i found no way to tweak it away efficiently. Which is really a shame, because camera stills can be acceptable without post-processing messing them up.
Video is bad. No comparison to the likes of Samsung. No 4k, and HD is very shaky -- perhaps there's no optical stabilization at all. The photo settings do have "deshaking" option but not the video ones, not sure what this is about, but it doesn't seem to do anything to video.
With the exception of image stabilization, the camera issues in theory should be correctable with software updates, but i wouldn't hold any hopes.
Update to camera features: I have found that one can download Open Camera from android market. It is ad free and fixes many sins of the OEM camera app. In particular, it gets you 4k video on this phone and more control over exposure and sharpening artifacts. I feel noise reduction is better there too. Another thing I've found is that this version of Android has video stabilization feature as a post processing. It takes some time, but the quality of stabilization algorithm is surprisingly good. I am not sure if it uses both cameras though, but the result does not seem worse than OEM one bit. So it's a bit redeeming. Still no best-of-the-breed bokeh type effect...
Also: I did run into the bug when orientation sensor seems to stop working, as other people have reported, so orientation changes stop happening until reboot. This doesn't happen often enough to bother me, and it is probably triggered with something i do when i play with the phone, but once i satisfy my interest in switching this and that on and off, it doesn't seem to come back. At least it doesn't seem to bother me.
Update 4/2019. After a few updates to the phone and open camera app, unfortunately the 4k video does not seem to work for me any more.
Also, there is no lte data failover between sims. Needs manual switch every time.
Otherwise the phone has been very stable.
Ok n a side note, it is a bit intriguing what umidigi F1 play camera will be able to do. On paper sounds tempting for practically the same price as it stands at the moment that I bought z2 for half a year ago. I am not the type to buy a new phone every 6 months though. But Umidigi seems to be a new player worth watching if you dont see a need spending $800 on phones.
PROS: Look great
Comes with a case that does not have a cheap feel and protects the phone well.
6 GB of RAM with 2 ghz octa-core processor work nice and speedy for video, audio and games.
128 GB memory (about 110 available after UI and loading all my old apps)
Large battery that easily lasts all day and charges fast. (I had a BLU that had en even larger one that lasted two ,
so I'm a bit spoiled but this phone has a long lasting battery)
No bloatware at all aside from inevitable google stuff.
Large 6 inch screen on a small and lightweight phone.
No physical buttons - the virtual buttons appear on bottom of the screen, a pain when you have an app on.
Finger print reader in the back is tricky.
No headphone jack (comes with an adapter which works great, just have to make sure not to lose it!)
Bluetooth works just fine except with my Honda's bluetooth system, when I plug in the audio the bluetooth
crashes - The phone function works fine, but voice commands for making calls are not compatible with this
Not the greatest cameras in the world. And the camera app doesn't offer a lot of options.
This phone has wireless QI charging - but I haven't tested it yet.
The phone supports up to a 256 GB Micro SD card for expanded memory - haven't tried that either.
Phone supports dual nano GSM sim cards - will try that some time I go out of the country.
I do recommend this phone, but one warning: there are at least three versions of the Umidigi Z2, my review is for the Umidigi Z2 PRO. The other Z2's are cheaper but have less memory, or no QI charging or less resolution - in other words make sure what you're buying is what you intend to buy.
Definitely look at all the 1 star reviews on a product, because I encountered nearly EVERY SINGLE problem mentioned in other reviews. Both UMIDIGI and Amazon have both been completely ignorant to any request for customer service.
Saw the great specs (6gb ram, etc) and thought it would be a steal, but I'm never gambling with a foreign product with no customer service base again.
Was beautiful while it works properly though.
