Sound is muffled from phone case on phone calls

While I love the durability of this case, the sound is so muffled when I make phone calls or listen to music that I physically need to remove the OtterBox phone case to hear anything coming from the phone’s speakers.

This is an updated review. Below you’ll see what I originally thought when I first bought it. I have had my new iPhone XR for less than 30 days and I just filed a claim to have it replaced through AppleCare. Last week I dropped my phone face down from a little over two feet off the ground. It was in my otter box commuter. I picked it up and it was fine, until I looked at the back a few minutes later. The entire glass back is shattered. This is not a replaceable part, so it’s a $99 deductible for a replacement phone. Nothing came in contact with the part that broke. I only heard the light sound of rubber hitting the floor. This was a nothing fall, and honestly I wouldn’t have expected damage even with no case at all. These things are “shock certified” (sarcasm). I called the company and asked what that means, since they obviously do nothing for shock, and turns out to be just a nonsense term that carries no promises or guarantees, so it might as well be “unicorn certified” because it means nothing. So this piece of junk is getting returned. I don’t know if it’ll offer better protection, and I hate screen protectors, but I’m getting a life proof. At least they’ll stand by their product and replace your device if it breaks while inside it.

I have owned many otter box cases. Commuters and defenders for multiple different iPhones. This is the first one I’ve given 4 stars instead of 5. I really don’t like the squared off front. It is very thick and bulky, barely thinner than a defender would be. I had a commuter on my iPhone 6 Plus. I absolutely loved that case. It was rounded around the front edges. It really felt like it had the best possible protection without having a screen cover or being overly bulky. I don’t know if they could do anything about the thickness. The iPhone XR is significantly thicker than my iPhone 6 Plus, and the camera sticks out a lot further, but I don’t see any reason for the extra bulky squared off front. It should also wrap around the front of the phone a bit more. I have glass screen protector on my XR and this case is almost 1/8” away from the screen protector the whole way around. Looks like I’ll have a little trough around the edge of my screen to collect dust and grossness. Like all otter box cases, it seems like it’ll give excellent protection. Over the past few days I’m getting used to it. I’m still considering sending this back and getting a Symmetry.

Highly recommend the OtterBox Commuter case for iPhone XR. I've used OtterBox products on my cell phones for years so when I got my new iPhone XR, the first case I looked to purchase was an OtterBox. I prefer the Commuter case due to the added protection with 2 layers. It's slim enough to fit in my back jean pocket or in my purse, while offering the added protection should the phone be dropped. The pink case is a great shade of pink (inner case is a darker pink (rose/mauve) while the outer shell is a lighter pink (ballet pink). The inner case is flexible with a flap for the power adapter and outer case is hard. Great phone protection with a great look!

Bulkier than previous versions

I just got the case today, so I can't speak for sure as to the durability and protection, but it is an otterbox, which I have had many of, so it will be great in those aspects as usual I'm expecting. I do think it is important for some people to know this: it is bulkier than the same case on previous iPhones. My girlfriend has this case for a 6S, which is a good thickness with round edges. I had this case for a 7; around same thickness with more square edges. Unfortunately, my IPhone 7 bit the dust and I now have the XR. The XR version of this case FEELS about 50% bulkier. I haven't done any measurements, just trying to give you an idea of what it feels like. The edges are also raised much higher than this case on the 7. The edges are even more square than the 7. With all this being said, I'm sure I will get used to it and it'll be fine. I just wanted to warn people that you aren't going to get the same experience with this case for the XR as this case on older model iPhones. Otherwise, I'm sure its a great case that will protect my phone from drops, which is the ultimate goal.

Fits my XR perfectly (Photo included)

This Otterbox commuter fits my new iPhone XR perfectly. It also plays nice with a Spigen tempered glass protector. The two provide outstanding protection from drops, bumps, pocket hazards and other mishaps. It’s a little chunky, so this isn’t the case for those looking for sleek and barely noticeable. For me, protecting my phone is more important than looking stylish. I’ve seen a lot of people with very stylish ultra thin cases made of leather and other fine materials but the phones had cracked screens. Makes me wonder what’s the point of a fancy stylish case if it leaves your actual phone vulnerable to looking like broken junk after a bad drop. If you want actual protection, this case is a great option. And yes, it absolutely fits the XR as my photo shows. It’s not overly loose or snug either. It fits perfectly.
