Although I didn't buy this watch at Amazon because they were out at the time I wanted to provide feedback to individuals who are considering a purchase.
As a start, it clearly is not an inexpensive timepiece. I believe it is perhaps the best value of any watch I have ever owned. I say this because it gets a lot of use. If I were to calculate the number of times I look at the watch or wear it relative to cost, it would be very inexpensive. This watch is so unique you just want to admire it.
I have had the watch for some time now and everywhere I go it commands attention. Everyone notices the shape then they ask about what an "automatic" watch is. In the time of all things battery powered, quartz and work-out/heart rate monitoring watches a watch like this tells everyone you are more interested in "the passage of time" rather than absolute accuracy.
Like most manual and automatic watches it is accurate enough for all things except perhaps hitting the thrust button on an Apollo capsule hoping to return home. For that, I might want a digital watch. My watch is only off a couple of seconds a day if I can even see that difference. You'll notice the accuracy on a monthly basis. I think if I was to wear it every day, it would be even more accurate. I didn't buy this watch for absolute accuracy, I bought it because of the style and it's iconic presence. This model has about 80 hours of stated run time and that seems about right.
Once you get the watch, you'll find it very nicely packaged in a wooden box. The size of the watch is just right for a standard or large man's wrist. If you have small wrists, you might want to get one of the other versions. I had my watch band adjusted with one less link and it fits perfect, just slightly loose but not flopping around. The watch is a medium weight watch, perhaps a bit less than a standard diver type watch.
Now to the fit and finish and design. Be sure to look up the history of the design of this watch which dates back to around 1957 by an ex-general motors automotive designer. You can see the creativity in the watch that was present in the late '50's cars. The watch is beautifully designed with details and curves that don't show up in the few pictures shown here on Amazon. The glass covering the dial is actually curved as it "rolls" toward the winder. The winder is tapered. The bottom of the watch is curved slightly to fit your wrist. The way the triangle shape flows to the edge of the watch is very elegant.
The dial on any watch is what you look at day to day and must give you pleasure to look at, if it doesn't, you bought the wrong watch. This dial is both elegant and functional in it's color, how the tick marks are shown, the red 12-3 tick marks, the shape of the hands the background texture. When you look at the hands you wonder if the long hand is actually going to make it in a circle and not hit the side of the watch case but it works wonderfully. The sweep second had has only a slight jump which lends a smoother movement.
Unlike most round dial watches of which I have a few (Seiko, Casio and an Omega), which are all functional and good watches, this watch face is like none other. I tend to like an automatic watch mainly for the movement of the sweep second hand. I struggle with the jump per second of a standard quartz watch, accurate-yes but far less elegant a movement. There are a few quartz watches with very high frequency rates and come very close to an automatic but why not just buy an automatic?
A close look at the watchband carries the unique design one step further. The watchband doesn't just dead end into the watch like most bands, it flows into the watch with soft edges and angles. How the watch links work together and the shape of the links works very well with the overall design of the watch. It really is quite striking. The clasp is a double clasp vs. one large fold-over clasp that would normally be common and much larger. The double clasp allows the watchband to flow from one side of the watch to the other without a big clunky clasp in the middle. The double design clasp effectively disappears from view and unless you look closely, you don't notice the transition from one side of the band to the other...nicely done!
To sum it all up, the design of this watch has an elegant, semi-art deco appearance unlike any other watch. It almost feels as if the designer of the watch took the classic approach stating that "each element of the watch must be able to stand alone as art and the as the components are assembled into a complete unit, the watch as a whole must exceed any single component in terms of artistry and refinement.
As a closing comment, I recommend this watch for an individual who prizes quality, design and uniqueness in a watch. Because this watch has all the design elements and functionality I stated above and the fact that I will own this timepiece for years, it falls into the "best value" category of items I purchase. If you can't afford it now, save up and buy it in 6 months you will not regret it.
