Why is it so hard for a person who bought the media to make a backup of their purchase or to enjoy it without having to rely on specific hardware?
Otherwise, it's an optical drive. It reads and writes as expected and hasn't died in the past day or two.
Update: It can be patched and downgraded. Just make sure you have a machine available that can do proper ATA over sata which is generally a 3+ye old machine as nothing modern really needs it. Search around and you can find the tools to make that happen.
The WH16NS40 and WH16NS60 are the same drive with different firmware, designed to prevent ripping of UHD Blurays. Apparently this new firmware also breaks the drive's compatibility with LTH BD-R, but good luck getting anyone to admit that. The product has been compromised to restrict users, do not purchase.
It is shipped with a firmware version that is not optimal for using MakeMKV (my choice of ripping software). Took me a few minutes to find how to burn "libre drive" compatible firmware. Once that was done, it has worked like a champ.
If you are interested, just google "libre drive makemkv" and you will find what you need. Even without that, the drive performs as advertised, will read UHD disks (and pretty much anything else) just fine, and burn with no problems (including M-Disc).
