Update: I am very disappointed that this light has become unusable. It now no longer turns off and does not dim. Many others seem to have this same problem. Goal Zero, please repair this switch issue before selling any more of these!

The failure mode of both of mine is that after some period of time, one side of the lamp will not turn off. It may flicker and/or get dim, but it won't turn off. This is not awesome, everything else about the lamp is awesome.
I haven't decided if I will send the replacement back yet or not. I love the lights, but there appears to be some issue with the lighting control circuitry.

At the time of this review, I have had this light for about 6 months. I love the lights performance and size, but it has flaws, and they are all about the button.
First, the button is exceedingly hard to press. Not only is it quite stiff, but it's hard to get your finger on it because of its size and location. It is nearly flush with the surface on either side and the flashlight lens is raised right next to it. My mother absolutely cannot turn on this flashlight, forget about holding down the button long enough to dim it. I understand you don't want it to come on accidentally in your purse or pocket, but this is overkill.
Worse, the button is almost featureless and all but impossible to find in the dark. A terrible thing for a flashlight. If you are familiar with the light, and have practiced turning it on, then you can manage. But if you bought it, charged it, and then dropped it in your bag expecting to feel for it and turn it on in a power outage a month later, you'll need more than a little luck.
Then there is the button's operation. As cool as the dimming feature is, three brightness settings would be more practical. To change from bright to dim you must hold the very stiff button down for almost 4 seconds. That's about 3 seconds too long. An hour later it's time to turn it off, so you press the button again. It doesn't turn off; it switches modes, and back to full brightness. To turn the light off you must always cycle through the remaining modes. If you turn it on for a few seconds to find your keys in the dark, you then have to press the button three more times to turn it off.
I am a flashlight junkie. I own dozens of flashlights and lanterns. Of them all, this flashlight's operation is the most difficult and annoying. The flashlight I carry in my pocket every day takes a half-second to switch from bright to dim, and another half-second to switch from dim to medium. What's more, the button is both easy and intuitive to operate, even in the dark, and it never comes on accidentally even though I carry it in the same pocket with keys and knife.
Still, the Lighthouse Micro Flash is not all bad. It's tough. Its waterproof. Its small enough to always have with you. The flashlight provides even area illumination with a smooth transition to a bright central spot for distance. The lantern can be set on a desk and won't shine in your eyes (even on 360 degree mode), or it can be hung from overhead. Both flashlight and lantern provide warm white light, and run time is excellent for the light's size and brightness.
I can't say "Don't buy this light", nor do I feel right giving it a low rating, since I don't know an alternative that has all these positive qualities. I will say, don't buy this light for your grandmother, or a young child, or anyone who doesn't have strong nimble fingers.

In the three that I own, I have not experienced one issue. For a small lantern, it really puts out a lot of light. There are 4 LEDs. One push of the button turns it on, lighting all 4 LEDs. A second push of the button only lights two. Pushing the button again turns it off. Holding the button down in either the 4 or 2 lamp configuration allows you to dim the brightness, if you don't require as much light. It also saves on the internal battery charge. Using all 4 LEDs gives you 360 degrees of light. There are 4 little blue lights on top, indicating the level of battery remaining. A full charge with four LEDs in use on full brightness gives me 5-7 hours of light, depending on ambient temperature. Using 2 LEDs on full dim will give you hundreds (yes, hundreds!) of hours of use. Great as a nightlight in an RV, house, or tent. It charges via USB and plugs in, just like you would the cable for your phone or other device, no cable needed. Full charge from flat takes about 2 hours. It also has a little loop on top to attach to a hook or something to hang it from. Small enough to fit in your pocket comfortably. And they are great in an emergency.
It also is available with a flashlight configuration, but I have not seen or used that model. As with anything, it is possible they had a bad batch go out, causing those issues for other buyers. Everyone that has one of those I purchased has not had a problem with them. Hopefully Goal Zero stood by their product and made it right for those that had issues. For me (and others) I have found them to be quite the little powerhouse of light. You don't need an additional charger or store bought batteries either. Exactly why I bought two more for myself. And just to clarify, I don't work for Goal Zero, and I'm not a paid ambassador for them. Just my opinion, but it's a great little light!
