Truly enjoyed this new one by George Pelecanos. There are basically three intersecting storylines at work which recount the lives of the novel's three principle characters. There is a private investigator who more than skates on the edge of the law by practicing a kind of robin hood sideline; a prison librarian who tries to help incarcerated felons find new life directions through books; and a young man who has made some stupid (and illegal decisions), been in jail and is now struggling to build a new life. These are all compelling characters who the reader will find easy to sympathize and identify with as the story goes on. These especially true in the case of the young man who is working of self-invention.
As good as the storyline is, what this resident of Washington DC most often enjoyed was the author's habit of including actual places, streets and events by their real names in the story. This lent authentic and reality to the saga and more or less converted the writing to a kind of colorful and in depth news story. Author Pelecanos really should be anointed as Washington's poet or writer laureate as he almost always seems to make the city part of skillfully written stories.
A very entertaining book, fully up the this author's usual high standards.
