The huge range of colors, they very well made heavy cardboard box that came enclosed in a plastic box to keep the outer box from getting damaged was a treat after receiving scratched and dented tin boxes of other high end colored pencils recently. Inside the box of Holbein pencils was 3 trays of sturdy plastic with individual holders for each pencil, and no twisting on the trays, they also has a ribbon on each side to lift them. By far the best shipping experience I have ever had through Amazon.
If they are still available through the Amazon.jp.com website - grab a set or two, you will have years of happy artwork, great feel in use, and a color range that can't be beat. Extremely happy customer!
These pastel colors are the same ones that are included in the 150 set.
They come in a sturdy cardboard box with a plastic tray. The pencils are the same color as the lacquer color. Each pencil has the name and number written on it. Holbein also includes a chart showing which pencils come with each set so if you want to build your collection or need specific colors, the chart allows you to decide which set you need to get the specific colors you want without having to buy the whole 150 set again.
The pencils themselves color like a dream. They are a wax and oil based. The best way to describe them would be like a comparison between Prismacolor and Polychromos- the colors are extremely pigmented, vivid, creamy, but not as creamy as Prismacolor. You can tell they are much higher quality than Prismacolor and they blend wonderfully, they layer well and you can do multiple layers easily. I love them for coloring books and card stock. They keep a sharpe point as well.
I suggest looking on Amazon Japan if they aren’t available on the US Amazon. I was able to get the entire 150 set for $244 USD shipped in 5 days to the US.
Japan is well known for high quality art supplies. The Holbein brand is very high artist quality- they are well known for their highly pigmented water color paints. I would have to say these pencils are up there with Caran D’Ache Luminance. I own several sets of pencils- Faber Castel Polychromos and Albrecht Durer, Caran Dache Luminance, Pablos, and Supracolor, Prismacolor, Lyra, Derwent Inktense, Castel Art, Irojiten etc.
my Holbein are hands down my favorite. The color selections amazing with So.Many.Colors. The pastels are very hard to find in other brands and the only comparison as far as colors go would be the Irojiten Color Dictionary set- except the Irojiten are very hard pencils and nothing like Holbiens.
These are a great investment. As someone who owns many high end art supplies, I would have to say these are my all time favorite.
