I tried the Pet Safe H-style harness with the padding inside the straps because I liked how minimal it looked. I assumed the minimal straps would interfere less with our dog's movement when running. But the straps were still too sharp on the edges, and the whole thing twisted when I used the front clip and rubbed her raw behind the arms after only 2 uses. I also tried the Chai's Choice, which had the same problem (as I think any harness of that same style would). Additionally, the ring on that one must be lower on the chest, because the leash pulling across her front leg gave her a nasty raw spot after one use. Also, the more padded Y-shaped front gapped terribly when using the front clip.
This harness seems like a huge improvement. If it doesn't fit snuggly behind the legs, I can see how a dog might back out of this, so if it doesn't fit your dog right, it still might not work for you. That's why I've docked one star. But it's only less adjustable because there are no nylon straps (yay!), and the velcro does allow a little adjustment. The clip at the top helps it stay secure, even if the velcro were to come undone. The best part is that the fabric is truly flexible and breathable and will move with the dog comfortably. A major problem I found with the other harnesses I tried is that even the so-called padding had stiff, rough edges where it was all sewn together. When using the front ring, the harness doesn't totally stop our dog's pulling, but it helps a ton and doesn't choke her.
On sizing, our dog has a large chest and a small neck (min pin, Jack Russel mix). Her chest is 21, neck is about 13, and she's only 18 lbs, so I went with the medium knowing it would need to be a little snug to work. It fits great. I think the large may have ended up being too loose. She doesn't always want to put it (or any harness) on, but once on, it doesn't seem to cause her any discomfort and she forgets all about it. This works great for our small, athletic lady. If you have a very large, strong dog, there's a chance this wouldn't be tough enough, but for us, this was easily the best.
UPDATE: This is still the best harness, a year later. Just tried the Ruffwear Frontrange, thinking I'd give that style another shot because I love some of their other products. I loved it at first, but yet again, using the front clip rubs the front of her legs raw. That's a nice harness, too, if you don't need the front clip. Softer than others, with some elastic give and very sturdy. But I've returned it and bought another one of these as a backup. The original is still in great shape and used regularly.
I have a maltipoo that is 19lbs or so and I originally ordered a Medium which fit but was tight. I got the Large size and it is slightly loose since my pup measures 21" around the chest. They don't have an overlap between the medium that ends at 20" and the large that starts at 21". Otherwise, the harness looks great and it looks like it's made of good quality material. I will try it out soon and will update the review if i have anything to add.
