The instant this item arrived and we removed it from the box, my spouse and I knew that this was no ordinary butter dish. It is rare that an item like a butter dish is bestowed with such grandeur. A friend of mine, on seeing a photo of it that I shared on social media, instantly opined that it is not a butter dish, it is a butter palanquin, and my friend could not possibly be more right.
Some might argue that as an every-day butter dish, this item is un soupcon de trop, a tad excessive, a little over the top. After having used and enjoyed this butter dish for several months now we firmly believe that those people lack vision. Darlene -- for this butter dish has such personality and presence that we found we had to give her a proper name -- has been not only a superlative guardian of our gold bricks of butterfat, but an everyday conversation piece and a real part of our family. "Darling, could you please pass Darlene?" has become a common phrase at our dinner table.
Our guests also enjoy Darlene very much. Many of our visitors have never seen anything quite like her. Some have been completely unaware that it was even possible to obtain such a lavish butter dish, and it has been our (and Darlene's) pleasure to inform them otherwise. We have occasionally been asked why we would use a holiday-themed butter dish year round, but again we meet with this lack of vision: why *wouldn't* we?
For those considering buying this piece: we cannot encourage you enough.
