This is my third tub of Barrister and Mann Bay Rum soap and right up front, my last. It all comes down to two things.
1) an owner's obsession with trying to fix what isn't broken.
2) pimenta racemosa, the plant indigenous to the West Indies and the MAIN scent ingredient in ALL traditional Bay Rum products has been decimated by the recent hurricanes, so what manufacturers are now using is a completely inferior product (as in the case of this soap), OR, using other ingredients to impart a Bay Rum scent (you can look at Turtleship Soap Co. as an example of this).
I have had email correspondence with the owner of B&M and he admitted to me that the Bay Rum oil (pimenta racemosa) he is receiving these day is, and this is his actual word, "rough". Personally, I call it awful.
While the soap itself lathers fine, it is now a very soft "croap", whereas the older "glissant" base was very firm. Not triple-milled, but firm. The scent now has a predominant "orange" smell. Not Bay Rum, imo.
If ever there was a company that personifies the old adage, "If it ain't broke, don't fix it", it's Barrister and Mann.
Granted, the scent problem is not the fault of Barrister and Mann. It's the terrible results of Mother Nature, however, consumers should know up front that the product they are purchasing no longer is the same. Now you all know.
