Granite Gear Blaze AC 60
Durability for the ULA pack seems pretty unbelievable. My brother has been putting his ULA through the mill for over a year now and I haven't seen any fraying yet. I've been using my Granite Gear Blaze infrequently since I bought it last October and while I haven't noticed anything serious, one of the side pockets (the one I stick my tent in) is just beginning to show signs of wear.
This pack has a cinch at the top, but you can fold and buckle it for water resistance. It's much more convenient than a zipper.
Overall they're both great options and I would recommend this pack 100%!! In my opinion some of the little amenities this offers over the ULA are worth the very small amount of extra weight. Also, it just looks downright stylish.
The AC60 came with a medium hip belt. I filled out the online form, made a copy of it, and sent the medium belt to GG. In a matter of days I had a large hip belt!
This pack really carries the load very well. I've only had 20 lbs in it so far, but I can tell another 10-12 won't be a problem. The hip belt is super comfortable and handles the load extremely well - no more feeling most of the weight on my shoulders. The only "negative" is the difficulty getting the water bottle from either side pocket. It can be done but I have to work at it. This is a problem with most packs. It would be nice if the hip belt had a pocket, but that's only a quibble. Highly recommend.
I am used to using a top lid pack with a ton of little pockets so this pack was a little different. There are not as many pockets and you basically load everything from the top. You can squeeze 'need-to-reach' items in the front pouch and water bottles in the side. It helped me improve my pack weight dramatically as I wasn't adding random last min things into small pockets. So, this was actually fine.
The strings around the pack held down jackets, wind breakers and flip flops as needed and synched down well. I would have perhaps added a pocket on the straps around the waist (for cash/card/headlamp or phone) but wouldn't compromise the lightweight and comfort for anything (no back ache, allows your back to breathe and works well in wind, rain and sunshine). HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!
