This review is solely for the Trace model. I got the wide calf ones because I have huge calves. My left calf is 18” and right calf is 19” at its widest. The left boot is perfect fit, but the right one felt a bit tight and felt like it was cutting my circulation when I first wore it, so I’m hesistant to recommend these boots if your calves are larger than 19”. However, after one full-day of wearing them, it does feel like it has stretched to conform a better fit.
I studied each style of the Dream Pairs boots before purchasing and decided on the Trace style because it has the stretch/elastic goring on the back and along the shaft which I believe would help with fitting large calves like mine. The goring does help A LITTLE, but the belts on the calf and ankle are NOT really adjustable, the button part is completely punched and can’t be unbuttoned. I usually wear 7.5-8 and I got them in size 9, as I was told that larger shoe size would contribute to larger shaft circumference. The size 9 provides extra room (but I think size 8 would have been a better fit for the footbed area, my only concern that it won’t fit my calf.)
I'm 5'1 short and the boots come up just below my knees, so if you're taller, the boots will sit lower on your legs. They also tend to bunch up on the ankle area for a bit and the "bunched up" part would rub into your ankle and can be quite uncomfortable for longer walks.
When I took them out of the box and tried them on for the first time, I was ready to return these boots – I wasn't able to zip it up my right calf. Thankfully, I found that it's actually easier to put on the boots as pull-on boots rather than zipping them up my calves. For my larger calf, instead of unzipping it completely, what I usually do is I unzip the top part 2 inches down, put the boot on, then zip it back up.
The footbed is super comfortable! The inner part of the boots including the footbed is lined with fake fur. Feels comfy to walk on, and the shaft hugs your calves. The boots do have a moderate traction, walk like a dream on dry (obviously) and wet roads but but it’s still a bit slippery on icy surfaces. Have not worn them in the rain or snow yet. I love how the boots look, hugging my calves. I got them in Camel color and I’m planning to buy the Trace boots in different colors.
UPDATE: I bought another Trace pairs in black and in size 8 which is my normal shoe size. Footbed fits great. But the fit on the calf is slightly tighter. The pull-on trick doesn’t work well for this one but yes it is zippable passed my 19 inches calf (with a lot of struggles and hurt my fingers). I unzip halfway, put my leg into the boot, pull the shaft opening closer together (as close as possible, stretching the goring so the shaft wraps around my calf) before zipping up. The zipper is strong which is good because you don’t want it to go too easily or else the zipper will keep sliding down while you’re moving, but this also means that zipping up around large calves can be quite tough. After 3 days of full-day wearing it, the material did stretch a bit and zipping up got easier and easier each day that after a week it zips like a good-fit around my calf. The shoes were slippery on icy sidewalks during my winter trip in the east coast.
