They work fine. I haven't tried all the colors yet, but so far the colors seem to lean more towards "natural" than "vibrant". I can't comment on how long the pens will last. The pens feel a tiny bit slippery to hold, but not too bad. Compared to a 0.4 Stabilo point 88 pen, they write a bit scratchy on regular note-taking paper. Thickness-wise they fall between the 0.4 Stabilo point 88 pen and the 0.3 of the dual-tip Tombow PlayColor K pens.
From another review I knew to expect two duplicate colors (peach, black) - see attached picture of the back of the tin with color codes. The storage tin is in OK condition - but I plan to store my pens differently.
For roughly $0.83 per pen the Staedtler fineliners are a decent value. If Stabilo made thin 0.3 pens in lots of colors, I'd buy those instead of Staedtler pens. Unfortunately they don't exist. :( But I've been using Stabilos for about two decades now. So maybe I'm biased. I primarily use them for writing, not drawing.
Oh, but I just saw that Stabilos makes a 50-pack of their 0.4 point 88 pens... *drool* I need those in my life! :D
So - the new Staedtler box set of 50 is wonderful! I'm not thrilled that they added 3 neon colours but that's really my only issue! The rest of the colours are perfect, and the colour of the cap is the colour of the ink - which if you use coloured fineliner pens often you know this isn't usually the case, you have to make a colour chart for most of them. The ink flows beautifully and no matter what kind of paper you're using - from vellum coated Bristol board to handmade mulberry paper (yes, I tested them on both of those and a few other types of paper) the point never drags or catches on the paper and the ink doesn't bleed a bit. Dries super quick too, so you can put another colour next to the first and they don't bleed into each other. I'm just now replacing my 3 year old 42 colour set of Staedtler Triplus pens with this set and the 3 year old set, despite almost daily use, the majority of the pens are still not depleted of ink or dried out - just running low. So I'm confident that the new set will last at least as long. It also comes in a nifty hinged lid tin, which is much easier to use than the original 42 colour set's vinyl wallet design. It's 2 easy lift out trays, and you can set the top tray inside the hinged lid so you can access all of the pens with minimal effort. I really can't say enough about this set - it's worth every penny. And believed me, I've tried plenty of other brands of pens - Tanmit, Raeon, Stabilo, etc., and wound up giving away all of them except the Stabilo set, which I keep in reserve for colours that are slightly different from the Staedtler Triplus set.
I know the Staedtler set may seem pricey when compared with 100 colour sets priced at $25 or less, but you get what you pay for - those will drag and tear the surface of your paper and likely will dry out within 6 months anyway. This set is an investment, and I promise you will love it!
