I want to believe in these drives. They look nice and the build quality is solid. To date, I've purchased about 50 of them from Amazon and B&H. Mostly 8 TB drives with some 6 TB ones. Unfortunately I'm seeing a high failure rate. 3 have been returned to the manufacturer and I just learned of a fourth drive that failed in the field today. And of the 4 bad drives, 2 were causing the computer to kernel panic. Myself and another employee have witnessed this behavior across a few different Macs.

G-Technology G-Drive is using the latest technology for file storage/transfers - Thunderbolt 3. The build is extremely solid and the brushed aluminum case matches my iMac perfectly. But because of cost constraints, be aware that this is not a SSD but a 7200RPM build and simply doesn't offer the blazing speed that Thunderbolt 3 is capable of at this point in time. You are paying primarily for the storage space these units are providing. Here is the speed transfer breakdown by storage size of this new HD: 4TB: up to 180MB/s; 6TB: up to 226MB/s; 8TB: up to 205MB/s; 10TB: up to 245MB/s; 12TB: up to 250MB/s 8.27” x 5.12” x 1.79” I have not used an active TB 3 cable with this machine so I'm not sure if that would begin maximize the potential speed of this TB 3 External HD but it is constrained already with the 7200RPM drive. And so far, I really don't see any real-world noticeable gains in transfer speed from my FireWire 800 OWC Guardian Maximus HD to the G-Tech TB 3 HD. The ease of use on a Mac is the best - plug it in, my iMac recognizes it immediately and I was off and running with Time Machine and file storage/transfers. Finally, don't bother logging on and/or calling G-Technology (which is a Western Digital Company) to register your HD. The company is no longer accepting registrations on these products via their online support page or phone. I know - I just talked to a customer support rep last week and that is exactly what he told me. He told me to keep the receipt for proof of purchase.

I am a sound designer, composer and audio production professional. I need storage space 1st, (fast HDD working space second and the ability to do automated back-ups using Time Machine were my priorities. This G Drive solved the first 2 needs perfectly but backing up with Time Machine (under High Sierra) was a nightmare. It is unclear why this is problematic but experience and others having similar issues points at the problem being Apple's fault. However, there could be issues with the supplied thunderbolt cable causing problems. I don't really care who's problem it is. For $650, it's not a problem I have patience for. I could buy a $40 apple cable for fun. But I'm already out $650 and that wasn't fun. So, I'm not sure how much more "fun" I can stand. All in all, the drive works as advertised but it creates an incredible amount of RF noise while running which interferes with my desk top monitors (Speakers, not screens). This roughly translates to the drive being powered off while listening (98% of my job!) Frustration over issues that won't bother most folks. Your mileage may vary. UPDATE: In January, I spoke with the reps for this drive at a trade show. When I described the problem, they responded with, "Buy a $100 thunderbolt cable and that (should) solve the problem." I don't know about you but feeling like I wasted $700 on this drive only to be told I should spend more money, didn't sound like a solution. It sounded like a cop out. It's 2019. There's no excuse not to be offering shielded products. I would strongly encourage buyers to consider SSD drives and avoiding this brand made by Western Digital.
With no fans and poor ventilation, this runs so hot that I am constantly putting ice packs on top of it to cool it off. Lots of money and Poor design. I wish I had never bought it. I had to purchase additional drives and enclosures (with fans) since I no longer trust this device. This was the first G-Tech drive that I ever bought, and it will be my last.
I've used G-Drives for years with no issues at all. I've probably migrated data over 10-15 years and several computers using these drives for support. I wish the G-folks would put more ports on lower cost drives.... but, oh well. This one hooked up to my brand new Mac in about 10 minutes and backed up all my data in no time at all. (esp. the stuff I had transferred from previous drives since you can either load your Mac of just back chain). The Cloud may be the future but it's still nice to have a direct, hands-on, back up as well.
