I bought this three-pack of LED puck lights over ALL its competitors for a single reason: I needed to replace my outdated halogen pucks, and the diameter with the housing removed (for recessed applications) fit the pre-drilled holes perfectly. The other products I searched for were too large. Note that I only needed two lights and the package came with three, but I ended up buying a total of four, as you'll see below. Overall, I am pleased with my purchase.
There are two problems, however. First and foremost, the instructions state that the product is "not intended for recessed installation in ceilings or soffits," when, indeed, the product is exhibited in this application by the manufacturer, and it is precisely the most compelling reason to buy such lights! The photos on the Amazon product page show this application, as does the instruction guide itself. The only explanation I can think of is that the manufacturer is trying to limit liability somehow...? In any case, I have mounted the system in my recessed application, and they work great: no overheating after hours of operation!
The other issue is both the short input/output wiring configuration, and the limitation of wiring the pucks in series, as per the factory supplied spec. The three puck kit comes with a couple of short extension cables, which are only useful if you intend to place the lights within about a foot of each other, either recessed or surface mounted; and, without modification, they need to be connected together in series with these extension cables. In my application, the best way to wire the product was in parallel.
Thus, I had to put my wire cutter/stripper to good use along with my soldering iron. I bought some zip cord of the same gauge and replenished my supply of solder and heat shrink tubing so that I could do a professional job of slicing, dicing and splicing the wires. I cut off the output wires of two of the pucks, as they weren't necessary for the parallel application. (Note: I carefully stubbed off the ends with electrical tape and heat shrink to be certain there wouldn't be a shorting issue, now or ever.)
I got a brainstorm for an idea for the third puck, and found that I could order a single fourth puck from Amazon. I wired these two in series at the top of my entertainment center to shine light on the ceiling in two spots (please see attached photo).
In conclusion, these LED pucks appear to be a fine product, but they may require modification for your application.
These AC light bars dim a bit when any significant small kitchen appliance on the same circuit is turned on. Also, unfortunately our coffee maker makes these flicker/brownout for about 10 seconds about twice per minute. This is with nothing else of significance running on the circuits and no other odd behavior in the kitchen circuits generally.
On the bright side, these are instant on (vs a short delay with most DC powered LEDs) which is great when paired with Z-wave smart power outlets that turn on when someone walks into the kitchen and off a few minutes after they leave.
