The next best Kuru Toga pencil you can get is the Roulette model:
Uni Mechanical Pencil, Kuru Toga Roulette Model 0.5mm, Silver (M510171P.26)
and it costs half as much as this one. Is this one worth the extra cash? Let's make a comparison.
Let's start with the similarities:
- Kuru Toga mechanism
- Solid, metal clip
And that's about it. These are very different pencils.
Now the differences.
The Advance has:
- A sliding sleeve
- A rotating system that is twice as fast
- A wider, shorter eraser
- A solid plastic body
- An okay but small grip
- Very nice color options
The Roulette has:
- All metal body
- Long, knurled grip
Kuru Toga certainly provides a better and more consistent line than one is used to with other mechanical pencils, but It's very clear that the original was tuned with Japanese students in mind, who use a lot more distinct strokes when writing than we do with the Latin alphabet, which means that it didn't work as well as it could with English. The Advance, however, provides the nice clean line that I always dreamed of getting from the Kuru Toga mechanism.
The sliding sleeve on the advance works very well; it does not ruin you line, and makes the pencil pocket safe. The point that it makes may help the sleeve slide more easily as well.
In terms of feel, the Roulette wins. That is why I still use it. As far as I know, metal trumps plastic every time. The Advance has a better line and a sliding sleeve that let you write for longer without pause, but the Roulette's grip is just way, way better. And even though the Advance is relatively fancier, it's not as professional looking.
The eraser in the Advance is not functional. It's the typical "cap" eraser that you'd never use. It is very flimsy. The one on the Roulette is small, but purposely so. It is solid and long. You can tell it's meant to be used, albeit for small details. This is one of the reasons I see the Roulette as a graphing pencil. For both I use an external eraser when writing, but for small details or in a pinch the Roulette's is much better.
All in all the Advance is a great pencil. I think it was worth my money, but it's a bit pricey. So depending on what you are looking for, you should consider the cheaper but excellent Roulette as well.

MacGyvered a Pink Pearl eraser on. I shouldn't have to do this.

I love the Kuru Toga line because it prevents smudging, which is hugely helpful in keeping my notes clean. I however have a huge problem with the pathetic excuse for an eraser. It's so tiny it's unusable. I know these pencils are made with the Japanese audience in mind because it's common in Japan to use a separate eraser, but I like my eraser attached to my pencil so it's not wandering around on my desk or getting lost. There is no way to attach an eraser to this pencil; the cap is too narrow, so the eraser just slips off.
How to attach a good eraser:
1.) Depress cap all the way and mark a line where it meets the pencil. Then remove cap from pencil.
2.) Cut a ~1cm section out of a BIC disposable ballpoint pen. I found that this specific pen's body fits snugly over the cap. Other pens may fit too.
3.) Coat the inside of the pen-section with E-6000 glue (superglue will NOT work) using a toothpick and slide onto the tip of the cap to the line. Lay down sideways on a flat surface and let dry for at least 48 hours.
4.) Stand the cap upright using something to anchor it. I used a chunk of sticky tack.
5.) Line the bottom of the pen-section with a piece of paper or something (keeps glue from oozing down through the holes in the pencil cap).
6.) Fill pen-section with glue to the top.
7.) Let dry upright for 5-7 days. This glue takes a looooong time to cure properly.
8.) Put cap back on pencil and push on the eraser. It may require a bit of force to get it on.
9.) Pencil is now self-contained. An inconvenient way to make this pencil convenient.

Could be more sturdy but writes very nicely

I often have to use a pencil for school and I prefer mechanical ones over traditional pencils. This pencil although in my opinion has a couple flaws is a wicked nice writing implement. The lead rotates so you always have a nice fine point to write with and the barrel color is super bright and sharp so you know it's yours. It stands out from typical mechanical pencils. The flaws and these are just personal grievances, are that it's very light weight. I would like it to be just a tad bit heavier in the hand. Also this is one of those pencils where you pull off the cap, pull out the eraser to add more lead which can be a pain if the eraser is worn down. I like pencils like ones from Pentel where the body opens in the middle to add more lead. This pencil uses the 0.5mm lead and does write very nicely mainly I wish it was a little heavier in the construction to give it a more sturdy feel.
