In my case, I have a Taylor 614CE that I was looking to tweak the sound a bit on. I was having a bit of buyer's remorse because I really loved the bass response of the 814ce, but OTOH the 814 sometimes sounded muddy to my ear. The 914 is a $5k guitar and out of what I'm willing to spend. I was just about ready to sell the 614 to look for something else when I tried the D'Addario NB's... and WOW!
The NB's brought this guitar to life and did everything that this particular (614) guitar needed to sound amazing. The bass tightened up and projected and balanced out the mids and highs. If you know anything about Taylor, their guitars can be BRIGHT. The 614 being a maple body and sides needed some taming. The NB's help retain the shimmer but tamp down the "ice pick" highs that some Taylors are prone to.
To be fair, I've had a set of them on my '81 MIJ Epiphone PR-755s for a week. They're pretty good on that guitar, but interestingly, THIS guitar's sound is not as balanced with the NB's as it is with a fresh set of Martin Marquis.
Bottom line: You're going to have to try them for yourself. They're pricier than other sets so you have to be the judge. So far I haven't found anything that sounds as good on my Taylor, and I've tried *a lot* of different strings on it. They're cheaper than Elixirs and (for me) last just as long (I don't like Elixirs either after 2 weeks). I'm finding, for my taste, the NB's retain their sound up to and perhaps past 4 week, but I feel lose some of the extra projection at 3 weeks. Again, you just gotta try 'em to find out.
I would read about players like Neil Young and Tony Rice talk about these nickel bronze strings and how their tone was well balanced with warm but not too bright or shrill. Now recently Martin has relaunched their Monel strings as Retro strings and Tony Rice and Laurence Juber have their own signature sets.
But I wanted to try D’addario because I heard their sound demos and watched their videos first. I have gone through two sets of strings in the past 6 months. I mostly play fingerstyle way with either thumb and fingers or thumb pick. Sometimes I do Deep River Blues, sometimes a modal vamp, sometimes a James Taylor song. These strings sound beautiful and the tone just lasts. I keep my OOO Blueridge in the living room at all times so I can pick it up and just jam. It is great when digging in and when played softly.
When playing acoustic, the tone is 80% hands. How do you articulate melody or drive the rhythm or create texture? The creative joy and challenge is finding all the sweet spots of tone, discovering new ways to play something that seems tired or just enjoying the groove. These strings let me do just that. I play for my enjoyment. I strum and hear the harmonic richness and love coaxing great sounds out of my instrument with these strings.
To prevent strings from breaking, while tuning, after feeding the string through the tuning peg hole, wrap it around the peg then around the string itself, so that when you tighten the string it will lay over top the string, thereby easing the bend of the string against the sharp edge of the peg hole.
They allow the guitar to sound like - you guessed it - a guitar!
They have a great ring, and bring out the best any guitar can give. I have played them hours and hours on one guitar and am not even close to wanting to change them.
They are the only strings I will now use on my acoustics.
These strings also do produce a slight squeaking sound when sliding bar chords up and down the neck. I sprayed some "Tone Finger-ease" on the strings and fretboard and that seemed to take car of that problem.
Overall, a solid set of strings.
