I've owned this lens for about two months and everything has been great so far. The sharpness of this zoom is phenomenal, quick autofocus, and great image quality overall. Last week on the other-hand had me rethink this whole lens. When you are shooting this lens with the image stabilization or VC turned on, it works perfectly...when the camera is turned on. When you shut off the camera with the VC switch turned on, on the lens, the internal glass rattles as if this lens is broken. It shakes so much that it sounds like if it isn't broken, it will easily break. The way around this to fix the rattle, is to turn the VC switch off, THEN turn the camera off. Doesn't sounds like the biggest of deals, right? Ok what if I forget to flip the switch off and the internal glass rattles so hard against the internal wall of the lens, that it actually breaks and the autofocus and VC then become completely useless?! I have to remember to flip that switch off EVERY TIME? Nahhh I don't think so.
I contacted Tamron support after talking with Amazon about this (which Amazon was very helpful and this review shouldn't be read as a fault of Amazon whatsoever) and the support from Tamron said "what you are experiencing is not a problem but a consequence of how the VC mechanism works; the VC needs to be switched off before the camera is switched off, this locks the VC elements in place.". What's interesting is that I always read up before spending $1200 and I must have read over the part where it says, "Internal glass may break due to the "consequence" of the VC mechanism and how it works." Spoiler alert, it doesn't disclose this anywhere.
Regardless, this is a great lens but for the future headache that this lens will cause me in making sure I switch that off every time after use, or deal with sending it in to get fixed with support, I am out and will be returning it.
Note to Tamron, you should probably disclose this information in the description before selling it to a customer that doesn't know.
