The bad: The USB connection on the computer side is very touchy. At first I thought my unit was DOA, but then I found that I hadn't properly seated the USB [Micro-B] end into the hub, even though it was plugged all the way in. It seats very loosely and doesn't make a firm connection. I've barely brushed the hub and had it disconnect all my devices - super annoying while in the midst of a large file transfer between hard drives.

The good: Buttons to turn on/off my devices individually.

I really wanted to like this - the individual buttons on each port were a big selling point, but I should have paid more attention to the reviews that mentioned the poor (physical) USB connection. I've lost too much time having to re-start file transfers because of lost USB connections.

Not sure how these made it past quality control.

I should have trusted the other reviews that said the cable doesn't stay in. I'm a computer specialist (so I know what I'm talking about) and the unit I got was terrible. I plugged the cable in and noticed it didn't actually "click" into place and felt loose. I set the unit down gently and the cable popped half-way out of the port. I didn't want to send it back so I thought I'd just glue the cable in. But first I decided to test it. I plugged in a few different devices on different ports and only one of them worked. Apparently a couple of the ports were out. I thought that maybe other reviewers were unlucky and got defective products or didn't know what they were doing. I was wrong...this think is a piece of junk. Which is surprising because my other Sabrent products work as expected.

Charges device after unplugged from computer, though acts funny with iPhone charging

I wanted this to power a bunch of USB devices and connect to them from my MacBook Pro. I specifically wanted a hub that'll keep powering the devices for charing even after the USB connection to my computer is unplugged. This does the trick! I even have this connected to a USB 3.0 port in a Thunderbolt hub that I'm using. Everything works! I'm using this for 2 Arduinos, a Nexus tablet, an iPhone, and other miscellaneous usb devices.

The USB 3.0 Connection to the hub is VERY LOOSE. It's either the cable or the port itself, but it comes out fairly easily. Beware. I'm not moving mine around at all so It should work fine. If I have problems in the future I'll just tape it in.

The lights on top of the hub are not very bright, which is good. I was worried they'd be too bright for when the lights are off, glaring everywhere. I was going to cover them with electrical tape but I've discovered that I don't need to!

Note that for my iPhone to charge with the computer off, it must be plugged into the hub while the hub is connected to my computer. Once I unplug the hub from my computer, the iPhone will keep charging. However, if I unplug the iPhone and plug it back in to the hub (with the computer disconnected) it won't resume charging. Kinda weird but not a big deal for me.

I think the only thing powered is the pretty blue button lights

I don't know what they were going for here being a "powered hub". It clearly isn't when it comes to doing anything more than lighting up the buttons.

Do not buy this for anything other than data transfer or low power dongles like bluetooth. It's not what they want you to believe. My phone actually LOSES charge while plugged into it.

4A of pretty blue lights is all you get for the trouble of "powered".

Sabrent makes a less expensive 9-port hub with 2 of the ports able to charge. You don't get buttons, but at least you can charge some things with it.

Worked Fine For 2-Years, Then...

I've been running this hub almost 24/7 for the last 2 years or so. It's done it's job until last week. A few of the ports are starting to show signs of I/O unreliability. I'm replacing it with the 10-port HB-BU10.

My storage center has grown and I've been running 7 Seagate 8-TB Backup Plus Hubs. Durring a cut/paste of about 5-TB of 20-30-GB files, the target drive crashed and so began the issues. Windows notified me of some USB device issues and the target drive was unstable. After disconnecting the target drive, I replaced it with another. It isn't a Seagate issue because I replicated the situation on other ports with the other drives without issue; when I used the problem ports, I saw multiple errors on those same drives.

I believe this hub began to cause voltage spikes in my PC and for my external drives. Thankfully, my drive was still under warranty. Unfortunately, this hub isn't.

I rated it four stars because during the operational time of the hub I always had speeds of around 100-110-Mbps on all drives. It was low profile enough to save space and the USB connectors never slipped out of the ports.

Wish me luck on the 10-port hub.
