How to Watch Soccer (English Edition) Kindle电子书
广告
An opinionated masterclass in the art and science of “reading” a match from one of professional soccer’s most respected and beloved international figures.
"For Americans new to European soccer, terms like 'false striker,' 'double accordion' or 'moving trios' need Mr. Gullit’s expert explications." —Wall Street Journal
Ruud Gullit knows better than anyone else that to understand soccer you have to understand strategy. When he started playing soccer, his only “strategy” was to get the ball, outrun everyone else to the other end of the field, and score. At first it served him well, but as he advanced through the sport, he learned that it takes much more than one player's speed to make a winning team. Over the course of his career, he worked his way from the Dutch junior leagues all the way to the legendary AC Milan, eventually retiring from the field to be a trainer, then a manager, and finally a commentator. Each step came with its own lessons, and its own unique perspective on the game. Now, having looked at soccer through every lens possible, Gullit shares his own perspective.
Most spectators simply watch the ball, but in How to Watch Soccer, Gullit explains how to watch the whole game. He shows how every part of a match, from formations to corner kicks, all the way down to what the players do to influence the referees, is important. And he uses his own vast experience to illustrate each point, so his lessons are filled with anecdotes from his years on the field and insights from his observations as a manager and commentator. This exhaustive guide will change the way even the most die-hard fan watches the beautiful game.

A Jumble of Thoughts on Soccer

Whatever this is, it's not a book on how to watch soccer. The first half is actually a pretty good read of the author's playing days. The second half, on the other hand, is a mish mash of thoughts and concepts that are thrown together in a disorganized way. For newbie soccer fans, this won't make sense. For sophisticated soccer fans, this will be a bore. There are some nice anecdotes and there's some insightful comments sprinkled in but the title is a misnomer. A better title would be, Ruud Gullit's History and Thoughts on Soccer. I would recommend "Inverting the Pyramid" as a better option but that book is sort of like drinking water from a fire hose.

Great introduction to soccer for people who love it or are unsure if they do, by a champion player and manager

An outstanding read for someone who didn't really like soccer until late in life. Crisp, clear facts and opinions about club-class to international soccer by a lifelong student of the game who achieved stellar success as a player and manager.

I pre-ordered the book at slightly higher than I typically like to purchase my Kindle books if possible

As of my review, there were four people that gave this book a five star rating. I really wish that was the book I had read. I am closer to the "Misnamed" review. I pre-ordered the book at slightly higher than I typically like to purchase my Kindle books if possible. I really thought I was going to get a guide on how to get more out of watching the game live or on television. Instead, this is something that is completely different.
I felt the book didn't have any real flow despite some of the chapter headings. There are a handful of tactical discussions and I would be wrong to say there are no interesting or otherwise insightful passages. Those are the only reasons I'm struggling to go below three stars.
Maybe if it was "Gullit's" Guide to Soccer" or "How I See the Game," my impressions would be completely different. As it stands, if you want some insights from someone that knows the game inside and out, this could be a good choice; however, if you think you will gain practical knowledge on getting more out of watching the game, you might want to re-think the purchase.

This is not good book, while some may appreciate insight into a player’s head, the book does not correspond to the title.
There’s a lot of “how good I was” or “when I played at AC Milan we were the best”, which doesn’t really help understand how to watch football. For someone who doesn’t know football, this is not a good place to start, is just confusing and not very well structured, while for someone who actually knows something about football, it’s just plain boring.
Gullit should have gone to someone who knows how to write and make things interesting, because there’s nothing appealing in this “book”.
The only reason I finish reading it, it’s because I paid for it.
