1) The larger size is better to get full slices of fruit/vegetables without cutting down.
2) I wanted liked the idea of a removable blade that I could re-sharpen so I didn't have to throw the whole thing out when it got dull.
3) I actually wanted a usable mandolin rather than a "kitchen gadget" that I would sit in my drawer
I am very disappointed and feel cheated because there are glowing reviews all over the web about this mandolin. The reality is that its basically unusable. I do not recommend buying this product and would avoid all of their "improved designs".
The mandolin thickness adjustment is controlled by a large plastic knob on the bottom side of the product. The plate above is hinged such that moving the rotating the knob causes the plate to be finely controlled relative to the blade. This is all fine in theory.
The problem is that the blade is angled to cause a slicing action as you pass a vegetable down the mandolin. However the screw underneath is rather large and supports the plate fairly far back from the blade. This leaves a very long section where the plate is unsupported in any way. In addition, the hinge itself is also incomplete (half circle) and is therefore unsupported when you place pressure on the plate from the top. The end result is that the plate almost never stationary and parallel and moves around a-lot. The unsupported section means that there is always a larger gap at the far end of the blade. When you apply pressure to the plate (when cutting something) this effect is exaggerated. Only small items cut on the upper side of blade come out uniform, completely defeating the purpose. When trying to julienne something the uneven cut causes the entire system to bind and jam. When cutting a potato I felt that the amount of force I needed to get over this made the mandolin unsafe. I am a 6'3" male and I was probably putting 10-20lbs of force on a single potato. The potato would usually crack and break off before fully cutting. I almost certainly ran the risk of serious hurting myself just trying to make dinner (and I was wearing non-slip cut resistant gloves too!).
I haven't owned other Benriner models, but from seeing photos of the "older model" this new design is almost certainly a cost cutting measure that makes the product worse. Even in photos from their adds, the older model has better support of the plate, using an angled support with two steel screws (for the larger model) for adjustment and a closed and supported hinge rather than an open one. So clearly the old design accounted for applied pressure during use and this one just wanted to get rid of a steel part that probably cost a few cents for better margins. With the sheer amount of glowing reviews that completely glance over this critical flaw I wouldn't be surprised if this company is also paying for fake reviews to drive purchasing decisions.
Another negative: I've used this mandolin twice and its already stained and any amount of scrubbing won't help.
Luckily, I will not be using this mandolin again.
