Fantastic Four #286 was the second of a three part story that started with Avengers #263 and would end with X-Factor #1. In the FF issue the Avengers deliver a cocoon that was found at the bottom of Jamaica Bay. Reed Richards is able to crack its secret and Jean Grey appears. The problem is she still thinks it was years before when the X-Men were fighting Sentinels. She quickly recovers, but doesn’t know what has happened to her. Finally the tale of how she became the Phoenix was revealed and it was Captain America who explained that her humanity was what allowed her to overcome the power of the Phoenix. The story is concluded in X-Factor.
Jean Byrne did the writing and art work and made this issue all story. There is no real action, but it serves the purpose of reintroducing Jean Grey and the story of how she disappeared for years.
Captain America finds a mysterious woman in a pod below Jamaica Bay- could this young lady be the X-Men’s long-lost Marvel Girl?
