Really, I have nothing to truly complain about so far, especially for the low price; I mean, sure, it's a very lightweight, hollow controller, and I'm not the biggest fan of the shiny plastic look (fingerprint magnet, anyone?), but the ergonomics are solid and everything is responsive. I doubt I could find something at this price point that compares, and I'm sorely tempted to buy another while it's this cheap, just in case I want another a few years from now and there's none to be found for not-ridiculously-inflated prices (looking at you, Xbox 360 wired controller!).
I originally bought this controller for retro games on PC, specifically because the d-pad was supposed to be far better than the ones on the other controllers I had. It was, and I was able to play games without getting unwanted up/down inputs for quite a while. Eventually, the d-pad started to get too "soft" and I started getting unwanted up/down inputs, and certain buttons started sticking/not responding properly. For the price, it lasted for a while, but not as long as I would have expected.
The company's customer service is pretty bad. I contacted them to try and purchase replacement parts (so I wouldn't have to buy the whole controller), as well as to ask if they knew of any way to help the controller parts last longer in the future. Instead of addressing either of the things I had contacted them about, they immediately ignored the reasons I contacted them and wanted a receipt or other proof of purchase to verify warranty status before they would even talk to me. I did not ask for free parts, repair, or replacement, I asked about purchasing the parts. I also asked about the controller model in general, with regard to proper care/maintenance, not about my specific unit. At no point did the warranty status of this controller pertain to this situation, nor is there any question of whether or not they made this controller. When this was pointed out, they completely stopped communicating. This alone is enough to make me refuse to deal with this company ever again.
The two common complaints for this controller for using it outside of PT DX:
- the ZR and ZL are now buttons in the same row as the select/- and start/+ buttons now. Not aa much of an issue if a game supports button remapping
- there no home button! I don't know why they did this. Even if they made it for a specific game, it should at least include all the buttons of the original controller. Even if you're playing PT DX, with no home button, you can't go back to the home screen at all or close out the game or power off.
Fortunately, I got it on sale so that helped ease the pain but it's definitely not going to be used as a main P1 controller.
