I gave this a 2 star because as of writing this, my garden has been without light for 3 days: the ballast blew up and threw my circuit breaker while I was on vacation. My friend who helped with the watering thought he just came while the timers were off so unfortunately he did not think anything was wrong. However upon arriving home, I immediately knew something was awry and began to investigate. After trying to reset the circuit, the unit would not trigger the circuit breaker immediately but within the time-frame it takes for the light to start after plugging the unit in (a sec or so before it fires) the circuit would trip again. It was then that I checked the ballast and immediately smelt the small of fried electronics with a carbon powder spewing out the exhaust.
I bought the unit 3 months ago and it had worked fine for that period. The unit has powered both MH and HPS both rated for electronic ballast and are 600W each. While it did work during that time (why I'm giving it 2 instead of 1), it still failed very early on.
The picture I attached shows the cause of the failure. It appears the output capacitor either arced through the thin insulator or burnt through it causing it to short circuit. The insulator seems very thin for the high voltages that are on the output line so it may be a bad design (not an expert on this).
I have emailed the manufacture to discuss the issue and am waiting for the response.
EDIT: Manufacture contacted me a day after emailing the support email. They are shipping a new unit to my address. Very happy with the speed and ease of replacing the unit.
UPDATE: The manufacture was very quick to reply to my email and offered a replacement. They shipped it and the replacement arrived the same week I notified them (emailed on Monday, got the replacement Thursday). Overall very happy with the ease of getting a replacement and the support provided. Updated to 3 star based on awesome support. Ill give this new unit a try and update if this one outlives the old one.
