I returned this product because there is too much maintenance involved in keeping it running efficiently. And it has mercury in the part which prevents bacteria growth. Important concept- bacteria growth prevention device. Poor choice - using mercury to counteract bacterial growth. Please go back to the drawing board. Make this humidifier easier to maintain ,safer to use, and safer for the environment.

That said. We are a Dyson vacuum cleaner family. We love them. Well made. Easy to maintain. Great Warranty.

I don't know what the negative reviews are really talking about because some people are too lazy to understand how these high profile machines work. Yes, the instructions say to use tap water but you should know to always use distilled water for any appliance that requires water. This includes your coffee maker and iron. Distilled water removes the metals and negative contents typically found in your city/well water by simply using the purest water possible. Cleaning becomes nearly negligible. Sure, you have to pay $0.87 for a gallon of distilled water at a grocery store to use this to the best of its ability but that's nothing compared to the quality of air you'll receive thereafter. This appliance is a breeze to use and it works wonders. It's quiet and efficient. I paid $120 for a different humidifier and hate to death the work involved (filters, grime, noise, etc.). I lost more money on that with my time and the expensive useless filters that eventually harbored MOLD. I do love Dyson products but this one was a must have for winter weather. And then it CLEANS the air when passing water through it using UV. Fantastic.

Excellent remote-controlled fan plus humidifier (while it worked)

This is now our third humidifier, all good and each better than the one before. We started with the PureGuardian H920BL 10-Hour Ultrasonic Cool Mist Humidifier, Table Top , which we liked for its tiny size for storage when not needed, and for its "Silver Clean" feature to avoid mold growth in the tank. Next, we stepped up to the slightly more expensive Honeywell HUL535W Cool Mist Humidifier, White which we liked even more for its larger tank size and not needing a power brick we could lose.

This humidifier is another big step up, both in cost and in features. The first new feature is an ultraviolet light to kill any bacteria in the tank before they could be sent into the air as mist. That's a high-end option on whole house furnace/air conditioner systems, and very welcome. Next, this Dyson can be run as either a humidifier backed up by a fan, or just as a fan. Since we live in a near-desert area, the added humidity is welcome even in summer, and ups the perceived cooling power of the fan by about ten degrees in summer.

Another important advantage is that this comes with a remote, one that is able to set the desired humidity precisely anywhere in the range of 30-70%, and any of 10 fan speeds, ranging from almost inaudable to very powerful but still quieter than most room fans. There's a timer for auto-shutoff any time up to 9 hours later, and an automatic setting that chooses the best humidity based on room temperature. Not mentioned in the instructions, but very welcome is that the remote locks easily in place atop the unit via a hidden magnet. If ever needed, a single screw gives access to the 2032 battery running the remote for easy replacement.

Industrial design is excellent, on a par with anything from Apple. There is a large but stylish power brick, rated for 1.5 Amps at 120 Volts (180 watts), but the most I could get the unit to pull even at full speed with the humidifier on was 47 watts, and 4 watts is all it takes to run the fan at low speed without added humidity.

The only downside is that it's a bit complex to set up and clean. To add water, turn the clear part upside-down in order to see the cap mentioned in the instructions. For cleaning, it suggests using an ounce of citric acid in a quart (liter) of water to wipe everything down weekly, with a more thorough cleaning monthly or when putting away for storage. I suspect that would also be good for our other humidifiers, though we've never done it, so I may also just wait on this one to see how long it takes to visibly NEED cleaning.

Overall, this is the best humidifier I've ever used, and it now has a permanent home right next to the bedroom computer on which I'm typing this review.

Update January 5, 2016: Sadly, after 4 months of use, the humidifier stopped working, eventually showing an F2 error (call the hot line), and the unit started to leak water. The hot line was happy to authorize and pay for its UPS return for repair on December 18, 2015. I haven't received it back yet, as of today. I'll update this again once I have.

Update February 12, 2016: Still not repaired. Popping a star.
Update March 10, 2016: Still not repaired.
Update March 23, 2016: Still not repaired. Popping another star.
Update May 13, 2016: Still not repaired. Unlikely to consider Dyson products in future.
Update August 31, 2016: Still not repaired.
Update October 1, 2016: Still not repaired.
Update April 27, 2017: Still not repaired, but phoned them today and they are looking into whatever became of the return for repair.
Update May 4, 2017: They just sent me a new replacement unit at no charge, with a 2 year warranty (only on units ordered direct from Dyson!) So, we'll see how this one does.

Not easy to clean and won't work if not cleaned properly.

This humidifier worked properly for about a month then stopped working. It's hard to clean and it extremely fickle. For such an expensive product, I would have expected better quality. I enjoyed it for the month it was working properly.

Proof after one use

Never been a fan of Dyson, because of the cost. That changed last year when I purchased one of their fans with heat/cool. This year I decided to try their humidifier. If you've ever taken that liquid cold/flu medicine at bed time, then you know what it's like to wake up in the after a few hours with dry mouth and feeling dehydrated. I took that med again last night but decided to turn on the Dyson. WOW, what a difference! I slept through the night and didn't wake up with dry mouth or feeling dehydrated.

Having owned other fairly expensive ultra mist humidifiers in the past that did nothing, I was skeptical about spending $400 on the Dyson. I'm glad I decided to make the purchase. One other note, I used Dyson's live chat for a tech support issue and the problem was solved in under 5 minutes. We'll see how it performs long term but for now, I'm thoroughly impressed!
